The SDMB is going places. (contest)

You know, a lot of people are pointing this out…so it’s leading me to believe that, yeah, I did underestimate some points like the banana and the Dollar and game and stuff. They shouldn’t have been that high. You’re all correct, guys.

However, I don’t want to go back on my word or change the points after it was already given out to someone. Not unless it was okay with Anastasaeon. But since I’m the one that made the mistake, It’s my opinion that she has the right to keep them if she chooses.

For any other things not yet done that anyone disagrees with pointwise, give your arguement and I’ll probably wind up changing it. Just as long as it’s not for every little one. :stuck_out_tongue:

I suggest the following using the specified point ranges as a guideline. It’s not perfect but assures some degree of fairness in pont distribution. If you want to add a new item, just figure out the best category and use the point ranges for that category to come up with a specific point value for the item relative to the other points avaiolable in that category. I tried to make it fair based upon how hard it would be for most Dopers to get the photo.

I’m not necessarily suggesting an alteration of existing points awarded, but, by comparison, under my recommended system, we would get the following result:

  25 Banana
  20 Bath
  10 Currency
  55 Total

AND

 300 Windmill
 100 Pacific Ocean
 200 Golden Gate Bridge
 200 Lighthouse
  60 Playground
  75 Baseball Field
 100 Bar
1035 Total

AND

  50 Wheelchair
 175 Operating Room
 225 Total

Whether it be about war in Iraq, gay marriage, Starship Troopers, or the points total for a photo contest… by God, we’re gonna have an argument!

Heh. :stuck_out_tongue:

The points revamp idea is more of a friendly suggestion to avoid arguments in the future, encourage people to play, and get great photos. I mean, if people knew, for example, that someone writing “SDMB” in mustard on a hamburger could get more points than someone spray-painting “SDMB” on the side of a wild polar bear at the North Pole, well, nobody would want to do any of the hard stuff at all because it’s not worth the trouble, and the game suffers for it. As long as people can rack up points disproportionate to the level of difficulty with “home photos” you’ll end up mostly with a bunch of “home photos” and not much more.

I’m just trying to help improve a great idea, and it’s best to get the rules squared away early since the game is expected to go a year. Idle Thoughts can accept, reject, or modify the recommendation … no big deal.

I’m calling 150 points (and getting this back onto the first page) for my photo of the provincial capital of Ontario.

It took me at least ten tries to get the CN Tower, the card, and my oversized cranium in the frame. So if y’all want to hand out points for degree of difficulty, pass them along.

Well done, bouv! Love the OR one…
still waiting for the coffin, though. Heh.

I dont’ care so much about the points, but that’s probably cause I can’t play (no digital camera). Good luck to all!

Man, I feel SO bad…cause I love your layout and I do appreciate the suggestions Bearflag, and I will be using your categories and layout next time I post the list…but I was thinking last night and well, I really want to keep the points I put on them originally as is.

I’m sorry you had to go through all that work to put them singley in. And like I said, it’s not all for naught as I will be copying and pasting your template and using it.
But I can’t help to feel a bit bad. I DID ask for suggestions, it just seemed you changed, well, most all the scores :stuck_out_tongue: and I want to keep most of them the same. If you had a problem or suggestion with, say, just one or two or three scores, I could have changed them if it was your or others’ opinions they were too high or low, but not to that extent.

Anyway, score and list update still coming soon. I figure since this will be lasting a year, I’ll only update once every 2 or 3 weeks or so. But I am keeping track of all the suggestions for places being made, and, of course, all photos being taken.

No sweat. Have at it!

YAY!

I get to keep my score so far, then?

Because it’s not likely I’ll get too many more points, being an agoraphobe and all. (I’m only somewhat joking.) I might, though. I will try. I am going up in the mountains this Christmas, maybe I can get to the top of one?

I might have gotten off to an early headstart, but my chances of staying ahead are very slim compared to any travelling Dopers.

After ONE month (and only 11 remaining) in first place is Troy McClure SF 910 points and takes a huge lead.

But don’t count anyone out yet. It could easily be passed by one or two photos.

Dropping down to second but still with a big lead is Anastasaeon with 450 points.

In third place and moving up fast is bouv with 290 points.

Finally in 4th place is Palooka with 200 points.

After almost two months in first place remains Troy McClure SF with 910 points.

Still in second but still with a big lead is Anastasaeon with 450 points.

In third place bouv remains with 290 points.

and still in the back of the pack is Palooka with 200 points.

10 months and 5 days remain.

I just found this thread, and I just came in her to say that bouv is really cute!!

I wish we’d been doing this back in October - we cruised the Caribbean and visited San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Marigot, St. Martin. Four capitals in seven days! Plus, we lounged in the Caribbean Sea on St. Martin, where I could have written any number of things in the sand. We flew to Florida and back. Plus, the gigantic cruise ship had an arcade, a mini golf course, and a pool.

Damn, I coulda cleaned UP!

Woo!

Can no one stop the seemingly unbeatable Troy McClure?

After 3 months and 3 days…he’s still in the lead.

Guess we’ll see if he can maintain that lead for seven more months.

I was going to say that. Most museums don’t allow cameras at all. How about getting a post card of the Mona Lisa or other work of art at the Louvre gift shop and take a picture it, with an official Louvre gift bag with the SDMB written on it? Or with the Louvre in that background.

This contest has been going on for around three months? This is the first I’ve seen it. No wonder some people already have so many points!

I feel your pain–we were in Egypt in April and I coulda had 1000 points easily.
