I do feel like Black Sabbath & Blondie were the no brainers.
Both huge to their sub-genres and I really like both bands.
I probably should give a nod to the Sex Pistols, but I really thought they were terrible and so I coin tossed between ZZ Top & Traffic for my third vote and Traffic got it.
I just went to youtube to listen to the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The U.K again. Oh boy does that suck. Terrible singing and showing no musicianship. Their form of punk just doesn’t work for me at all. Ramones were just about the first and probably the best Punk band. I stand by snubbing the Sex Pistols.
ETA: Maybe the Clash were the best punk band.

Agreed. I’ve never been much of a Sabbath fan, but their influence can’t be questioned.
Yes he’s jazz, but I’m still going with him for my third vote. Defining rock is exceptionally tricky, and there’s enough crossover with jazz for me to let it slide, especially for a musician as great as Miles.
Yeah, but John Coltrane had about ten times more influence on Rock n Roll than Davis did.

which would have been a really killer triple bill in 1977,
but along with the class of 2007, we also have a write-in candidate in “Weird Al” Yankovic! If there are any other write-ins waiting for their moment, I have forgotten them and need to be reminded.

I’m not too excited about this class.
Yeah, Buddy Guy is the only one of these artists I ever actually listen to.
I literally voted for the 3 I’ve either seen live or had a CD for.
I do like Patti Smith, but she doesn’t seem like inner circle Hall.
I like some of Van Halen’s stuff, but I always thought they were over-rated.
I actually can’t stand REM. I kind of hate their music, especially Happy Shiny Earworm.
Weird Al is fine in small dosages, but not Hall of Fame material.
I love REM, probably a top 5 band for me. But other than Kate Pierson’s lovely voice I care neither for that song, nor really that album taken as a whole. I tend to be more of a deep cuts guy when it comes to them as a band. At any rate they loom HUGE on the College/Indie/Alternative scene, I think they’re the one automatic vote here for me.
Can’t join the Yankovic train, as talented as he is. I’m torn with the rest.
Grandmaster Flash et al should almost be an automatic vote as The Message is so seminal for what was to come in Rap/Hip-Hop. But their career as a unified group was so short.
Patti Smith is another NYC New Wave icon and arguably a more serious uncompromising “artist” than the likes of Blondie, who had a more pop sensibility. But if we’re taking the Ramones and Blondie from that scene, should we also add in Smith? I dunno - maybe.
Van Halen is another band I’m personally indifferent to, but were undeniably very important to a generation of “guitar heroes.” Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top were good bands - I listened to them a lot when I was young. But I don’t think they cross into top tier. Same with the Ronettes. Buddy Guy, is Buddy Guy - great, but not quite there for me.
I guess Flash and crew get my second vote despite limited longevity and Van Halen get the third despite limited affection on my part.
I could have written @Tamerlane’s post word for word, and I settled on the same three for the same reasons. And in addition to Kate’s voice on SHP, I could watch her dance in the video all day. The rest of the song…meh.
