The Sequence Of Hellboy Comics

Hello,

So, I’ve recently had the good fortune to come into possession of scanned electronic versions of a number of Hellboy comics, and I’m trying to determine what sequence they should be read in.

The titles are:

Hellboy - Almost Colossus
Abe Sapien - Drums of the Dead
Batman, Hellboy & Starman Book 1
Batman, Hellboy & Starman Book 2
Ghost_Hellboy_01
Ghost_Hellboy_02
Ghost_Hellboy_Special
Hellboy - BRPD
Hellboy - Conqueror Worm Ch1
Hellboy - Conqueror Worm Ch2
Hellboy - Conqueror Worm Ch3
Hellboy - Conqueror Worm Ch4
Hellboy - Seed of Destruction TPB
Hellboy - The Chained Coffin and Others Ch1
Hellboy - The Chained Coffin and Others Ch2
Hellboy - The Chained Coffin and Others Ch3
Hellboy - The Chained Coffin and Others Ch4
Hellboy - The Right Hand of Doom Ch1
Hellboy - The Right Hand of Doom Ch2
Hellboy - The Right Hand of Doom Ch3
Hellboy - The Third Wish #01
Hellboy - The Third Wish #02
Hellboy - The Wolves of Saint August
Hellboy - Wake the Devil
Hellboy - Weird Tales #1 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #2 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #3 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #4 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #5 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #6 of 8
Hellboy - Weird Tales #7 of 8
Hellboy Jr - Gets A Car
Hellboy Jr - Halloween Special
HELLBOY-Seed of Destruction
Next Men #21
Painkiller Jane - Hellboy
Savage Dragon - 34
Savage Dragon - 35

I tried the Dark Horse comics website, but some of these titles aren’t even listed. A google search for Hellboy Chronology came up with nothing useful.

So does anyone know where I should begin? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The Trade Paperback List website, located at http://www.tplist.com/ , is exactly the reference you need. It breaks down the order to read the volumes in, and also which issues and individual stories were included in each trade paperback. I’d link you directly to Hellboy, but the site has frames. It’ll be easy enough to find with a quick search under “H.”

The website is worth bookmarking, as any comic fans will want to come back to it as a resource.

Thanks, BBVD. That’s a great resource.

Another great website for all things Hellboy is, not surprisingly, the official Hellboy webpage.

Quick answer: Start with Seed of Destruction and then go to Wake the Devil. The others can be read in just about any order, although you should probably save The Conqueror Worm for last.

And The Chained Coffin and Others is my favorite, if only for “Box Full of Evil.” The Starman and Ghost cross-overs are pretty forgettable.

If you like Hellboy, you should also make an effort to get The Amazing Screw-On Head, a one-shot story by Mike Mignola. It’s the same art style as Hellboy, but it’s definitely more of a comedy. One of the funniest things I’ve ever read.

Perhaps the most entertaining single-issue comic book story I’ve ever read, especially the (non)ending!

You will be happy, then, to learn that it is being developed by Mignola as a half-hour animated comedy show for the Sci-Fi Network (scheduled for 2004-2005).
