But they are truly anti-intellectuals. They can handwave away anything I say on the grounds that I am a “liberal”, even though I am really not. They don’t truly engage- the Ukraine conspiracy theory was just so much chaff to throw up for the moment; it seems to violate some sense of rules to return to any subject a second time to reexamine it.

My next question for a Trampster would be, “If a middle-aged playboy talks of ‘dating’, do you think he means lemonade socials?” Try to keep a straight face with the answer.
The only Trump supporter I talk to on a personal basis is my father-in-law. We got into a pretty heated discussion when I suggested that contrary to his opinion it Muslims were not going to take over Europe and enact Sharia law, back in early 2016. It became clear that he and I were basing our arguments on different sets of facts, (he maintaining that Obama was letting in Syrian fighters in to the US as refugees without any screening). So I thought it best to agree to disagree and take a time out to cool off. Since then I’ve studiously avoided talking politics with him and let the occasional political jab he makes go by without comment, so we get along great.

My guess to general gist answers:
“Not really. We’re America, we do what we want. What should I care what a bunch of feminine socialists say? They’re the one who turn to us for troops, so if they don’t like it, they can go hang.”

If the names were different - if it was Hillary and not Trump, and China and not Ukraine - would you still be totally cool with what the President has been doing?
