The shotgun in Halo video game

I’m hooked (again) on Halo, revisiting the game after about a year and something struck me as odd (other than the zombie aliens and how the little bastards speak english).

The shotgun that makes nice big holes is loaded from the top in the game, yet the barrel seems also to be on the top of the weapon.

Is this accurate? Is there a shotgun that is top-loaded? If so, and I assume the magazine is below the barrel, how do the shells get routed into it?

Finally, 12-cartridges in the magazine? Even the extender on the Remington 870 maxes at 8. How’s is this possible.

Well, the police and military have access to all sorts of stuff that isn’t available to the general public. IF they want a 12 shell mag, then Remington is going to give it to them.

It’s also important to remember that Halo doesn’t take place in the present. What current weapons can do is pretty irrelevant when you consider that you could just as easily toss away that shotgun and pick up a plasma rifle.

The AA12 automatic shotgun has an 8 or 20 round clip. If that’s not enough, you can get a 32 round drum as well.

Doesn’t answer your “top feed” question, but I imagine there’s a bit of creative license in the game

Well, yeah, there is that.

The human weapons, though, all seem to be fairly realistic, at least given my limited knowledge. All the clip weapons load from the underside & they make an effort to show the bolt being pulled back before loading & snapping back afterward.

So, why no show the shotgun getting flipped to load? That’s what started my wondering.

Having nosed around a bit more, it appears the NeoStead shotgun is what you are looking for.

13-round magazine - check
top loaded - check
magazine on top of the barrel - check
Now just head to S. Africe to pick one up, and you’re set for the weekend.

There are a number of existing examples of top-fed weapons, including the Bren gun (British light machinegun), the Owen (Australian version of the British Sten submachinegun) and the Lewis gun (British light machinegun with a top-mounted drum, it was used as an airplane gun during WW1).

Maybe it’s just the Brits

In other words there’s no reason that you CAN’T build a top-feed gun of whatever sort. It might not always be the best idea but whatever floats your boat. I assume Bungie put it in the game because it looks cool.

Actually the Shotgun is loaded from the side, when you hit the button the master chief twists the weapon and loads in the shells.

Computer version of a hollywood weapon, I think for the same time frame in the future , the shotgun in Aliens only had about 8 rounds for close encounters of the third kind.

Declan

Who cares how it loads, it is so much fun unloading that bad boy into the flood forms!
