Michael Moore part was funny! They were parodying him, not having him as some sort of good character.
I almost had a date! I’ve gotta tell Willy!
It was good to see the German kid back from his death a few years ago.
The line seems to be drawn between people who loved the Evita parody, and people who didn’t get it. In case anyone else is interested, here are the lyrics for the “Rainbow High” parody:
(chorus) Eyes, Pearls, Smile, Hairpoints
Dress, Voice, Shoes, Swatch Watch
I may be a new girl
But you can’t brainwash me
Just Oshkosh B’Gosh me
And then leave me be
To fight for kid power
I must be heard, not seen
I have to lead wisely
Not just primp and preen
(chorus) Nails, Dimples, Ears, Scrunchie
Pearls, Lunchbox, Teeth, Milhouse
This beauting-up suits me
There’s beauty within me
So let’s Olsen Twins me
Give them something to love
This grownup makeover
Has made me a super-tween
For they are my people
And I am their queen
Not really. I got it, I just thought it was 20 years late and utterly lacking in any wit, originality or humor.
I agree with Eve. Compare this episode to the Sherry Bobbins episode (another musical parody), and there’s absolutely no comparison. The “Half-Assed Job” song? Hilarious. The “Barney the Booze Hound” song? Gimme more! Sherry Bobbins flying off on her umbrella, with Barney waving goodbye and saying, “Goodbye, Superman!” and then Sherry getting eaten through a jet engine? Holy Christ that’s funny!
Sorry, this episode was pathetic. Lately the only funny things on the Simpsons are Willie and Homer (and only when Homer isn’t the main character in the scene).
I must agree, Munch, that the Shari Bobbins episode was probably my favorite one ever—no matter how many times I see it, I injure myself laughing. Favorite moment? Maybe Apu singing with Shari’s picture on the milk carton.
Addressing only the timeliness aspect, Evita first appeared on stage in (I think) 1981 and was parodied in 2003, a 22 year gap. Mary Poppins was made in 1964 and parodied somewhere around 2000, an approximate 35 year gap. So it doesn’t seem very fair to slag this ep for not being timely when your favorite is even less timely.
Wit, originality and humor will vary by observer. I thought it was an OK ep, but then I was engaged in, er, physical activity while it was airing so couldn’t give it my full attention.
Point well taken. So, I guess I can just sum my opinion up thusly:
Mary Poppins episode: Hilarious, pointed, witty, dark, brillant.
Evita episode: Zzzzzzz . . . .
