Interesting. Thanks for the link. (I was too lazy to look for one myself)
Strangely, on the news, about the only thing the talking head said was a quote from that story:
*
“Northstar Ski Patrol responded to a ski incident on advanced terrain, where the guest had been skiing at the resort,” *
Condition at Tahoe are simply incredible! Perfect temp, most snow in decades, no wind, sun… fabulous!
Did a little over 30 lifts today (maybe 37k vertical), taking the kid tomorrow and Friday, maybe Saturday (before another storms comes in, forecast, ANOTER TWO FEET!)
Truly an embarrassment of riches! Only negative is my AWD car broke yesterday.
Had a decent weekend skiing in NY last weekend. Weather was odd (50’s and killer fog) but the steepest slopes were skiing great. It never quite turned into mashed potatoes and the backcountry is toast, but hey, it’s skiing. They had to close the lifts an hour early on Saturday due to lightning danger - that’s never happened to me before.
We might get some good dumps before the year is out but the base took a huge hit the past two weeks, not sure if it’s possible to recover. Should’ve headed west this year.
I introduced a friend to cross-country classic skiing last year. Yesterday she tried her fist her first sustained pitch and smoked it in a flawless full tuck. Literally. Delaminated the the base of one of her skis from midpoint to the tail. I was impressed.
Glue fails over time, so old skis eventually delaminate. Edgeless skis are a lot more prone to this than edged skis.
This must be my year for delamination. The power straps on my old XC boots delaminated this year (Aquaseal took care of that). The alpine force distribution plate under my tele binding delaminated (I’m still limping from that). The base of one of my old XC skis delaminated when my friend was skiing (I’ll try some West slow cure marine epoxy, but I’m not holding my breath).
I wonder if I smell bad or something, causing glue to fail and children to flee?
Yeah, I’ve had delam a few times over the years, but nothing quite like that. And it’s usually been the topsheets which I’ve managed to jury rig for a while. But those skis look done for.
Yup. The’yre toast, for even if epoxy holds for a little while, it will delam again, and the un-delaminated section will delaminate, and odds are that the other ski will delaminate.
I’m hoping that a temp fix will get her trough the rest of the season (only a few weeks left for xc due to four major thaws), and then we can pick up a good set of used skis at next fall’s swap, rather than pay for a new set now only to use them in rough conditions.
Or perhaps I’ll just be a lazy bugger and loan my xc skis to her and use a 54mm tele set for myself (I gave my backup xc set away to another friend, and would not wish my xc rock set on my worst enemy), and then just use the delaminated skis for an entry in the dummy downhill.
Spent Sunday chasing my wife and her sister doing non-stop top-to-bottom runs in single digit temps on firm but not icy terrain. It was class 2 fun, and a great workout, but not really my cup of tea. I was on my AT gear for the day, not really the sweet spot for wide tele boards.
Did another 3 day stint. Thursday - Saturday, with my kid. Snow was kind of mushy, like curing concrete, but really good in some spots. Just gotta know where.
Racked up 75k vertical over the three days. I was doggin’ on Saturday. Stopped for lunch (brought a Subway), then stopped again later on.
I must be getting old.
Planning on going on a solo tomorrow. Drive the e10 for fun!
Nice going. Here at Park city, hot and very spring like conditions, so groomed south facers in the AM and north in the PM. The run outs get interesting as you go from patched that have been in the shade to sun.
.
We have 7 pair of skis in the car for the two of us, prepared for anything this weekend (lift, backcountry, XC) up in Jackson, NH. Avy danger is too high for anything really interesting like Tucks or GoS but we have options.
My skis are coming out of my car tonight. Monday was a great last day, but there’s nothing worth skiing around here any more. Even the base is almost down to dirt.
