The Ski Thread - who's up for it?

Hey, Omar,

When in Tahoe, your pass is also good for Heavenly and Kirkwood. If you have a rental car, you might want to check them out. Both are better than Northstar, in my not-so-mumble opinion.

Thanks, I’ll look into it.

Just got back from Tahoe. The snow in the in-touched area of the drive way and the decks are SHOULDER HEIGHT! !

Nice sunny weather for the foreseeable future. See ya, folks!

Ski patroller killed at Squaw Valley today in an avalanche control accident. :frowning:

Walleye February 2017

Nice, looking sharp, if a little low for my taste (and knees).

My ski weekend (Jan 27-29) at National Forest Lodge in Isabella (sort of near Ely) was good. They had a similar warming that we had but less severe. Plenty of base but the top was icy/crusty. The groomer improved things on Saturday. Temperatures were in the 20s (maybe the teens on Sunday).
I skied about 20 miles and snow-shoed 3.5 Skied most of the trails (missing 13-21, 6-9, and trails south of Flathorn Lake)

Did a rare weekend. Got lucky and scored prime parking, right next to the lift both days! Near perfect conditions. Maybe 60-65k vertical feet? Good times!

Another huge series of ultra-wet storms hitting us…

… and it’s all RAIN! :frowning: Even above 8000 feet.

We’ve had a bizarre stretch of weather; yesterday started with light snow, ended with heavy rain, over night we had a flash freeze and everything was solid ice for the morning commute, now it’s pushing 50 degrees, and we expect a nor’easter tomorrow with 8-14".

Headed north on Friday for 2 days of backcountry teaching around Mt Washington. Hopefully will a few runs from Tuckerman and Gulf of Slides.

New England (especially Maine) is off the hook right now. 4 feet of fresh with a little more on the way. Unfortunately there’s a bit of a rain crust in the middle that makes things interesting in the backcountry but nothing that can’t be worked out.

When come back, bring vids.

I replaced the de-laminated Nordica X Balance plates with the Vist plates. They work nicely, but don’t transmit as much force to the heel area the way the Nordica’s did. One of the down sides of tele is that you don’t get as much force on the back of your uphill ski when turning as compared to alpine. The Nordica X Balance plates were very good at doing this, but the Vists not so much. Pity that the Nordica X Balance is unsafe due to it using inferior material rather than more substantial material.

Last year a fellow turned up at my office and gave me a near-mint pair of Nordica Super-G skis with 9mm Marker piston plates. A couple of weeks ago I was digging about in one of my parts buckets looking for the Vist plates, I came across a pair of Marker Comp 1800 alpine bindings stripped from one of the GS skis that I use for tele, so while waiting for my knee to heel up from the X-Balance fiasco, I mounted the bindings on the S-Gs, I want to see how they feel, and see if I can ski them rather than be skied by them.

If I can ski them (and that’s a big if), I’ll put my mind to how to go about mounting releasable tele bindings to them (presently I’m leaning toward fabricating a steel interface to mount on the piston plate, and then kluging a non-riser Voile releasable to the interface). It could be a mess and a waste of time, but there’s a possibility that it could be a lot of fun. Chisquirrel, if you see a somewhat confused fellow hurtling down one of the Moose runs grabbing for the train’s emergency stop cord, you’ll know who it is.

So anyway, here I was getting back on GS skis a few days ago, with S-G on my mind, only to find that the folks at my hill are eager to add 40 feet vertical to a run they cut last summer. Forty more feet and it will be FIS spec. I am one lucky son of a bitch – one fellow gives me S-G skis, and some other folks cut an S-G run. Wheee!

No videos, but lots of good photos. I didn’t take any on GoS, too busy trying to keep up with the group I was “leading”.

Hope you post links to them.

1967 Oldsmobile Toronado – not maneuverable, but very smooth, very fast, and I fell in love with my first car the first time I drove it.

2017, Nordica SG WC – not maneuverable, but very smooth, very fast, and tonight on the first test drive, I fell in love with these Super-G skis. What a divine ride! No vibration, no slipping, and as fast and as solid as a locomotive.

Local resort is reporting 62" of snow in the last 48 hours! I’m goin’ tomorrow.

Welch is reporting 8" so far, with the snow still coming down like crazy. Guess I get to try a new place tomorrow!

Just got back from 2 incredible days! Snow like I haven’t seen since the early 80’s.

Another dead snowboarder at Northstar. Local news was curiously vague on details.
