Gun culture in the US is also rather broad. It’s one thing to criticize the U.S. for its inner city gun violence. But, when your sitting on an island of a continent whose megafauna is largely extinct and your critical of gun culture around someone from say Montana or Alaska where owning a rifle makes more sense than not owning one by any objective standard, then not only do you look smug, you also look like an idiot.
If our significant problem is drunk drivers and yours is your gun laws, then I would note that we don’t allow drunk driving whereas you let any idiot buy a gun.
Yes, it would be very American.
When you use the existence of megafauna in North America as having any kind of real relevance to what passes for the public face of “gun culture” in the USA, then you’re the one who looks like a smug idiot.
There are parts of the US where guns are genuinely useful due to predatory animals that are directly dangerous or that prey on valuable livestock. That aspect of “the gun situation” here in the US is of minor importance politically. The gun owners who fall into that group are in a definite minority among gun owners. One of the slogans bandied about on gun boards says “The 2A isn’t about hunting.” It isn’t about shooting chicken-stealing foxes, or aggressive bears, either. Bringing those things into the discussion only validates the mistaken notion that we should even be discussing them in this context.
Besides, it wasn’t the bears and mountain lions and angry skunks and so on that guns were ‘necessary’ for all those generations ago. It was the sitting tenants.
Says the man who lives in a country that goes out of its way to advertise itself as ‘The Greatest country in the world’, and ‘A shining city on a hill.’
Fuck off.
P.S. - Your healthcare is shit.
It was the English, among others, who came here and displaced them. You also quite happily sold them guns and other weapons to use on each other and on your friends from just across The Channel. The French, of course, were doing the same.
Perhaps I was unfair to you in that last post. Perhaps you are one of those folks who thinks that all the Indians were out in “The Wild West” and were all Apaches and Commanches and such. The US most assuredly didn’t cover itself with glory in its dealings with the Western Tribes, but we were building on lessons we learned from the Brits and Europeans in their dealings with native tribes in other parts of the Americas.
Given your apparent distaste for Americans as well as American gun laws, I can only conclude that you must be very much in love with money to subject yourself to such unpleasant, dangerous people by coming here just for the sake of a paycheck…
The OP is doing an excellent job of living down to the Stupid American stereotype.
Did some bigger boys tell you to do it and then run away?
diddums.
Oh, and stand up straight and address me as “sir” when speaking to an Englishman you colonial commoner you!
What is it with you and “Love America; Love our guns” rhetoric?
America has a lot going for it. Lack of strict gun control laws and socialized healthcare aren’t two of those things. Foreigners aren’t the only ones who agree on the subject. Plenty of your own countrymen would support changes to put limits on the former and expand the latter and that’s a pretty vocal opinion these days. Perhaps it’s you who should consider moving to a more gun friendly nation?
I’m sure that probably reads funnier in the UK than it does here.
How about this, then: In the time period when the US was so poorly handling the Native Americans, how was the UK doing in its dealings with the native populations in other parts of the world? Is that clearer?
You can sing just that one note? Is that it? The “love America” aspect of this discussion is entirely a product of your imagination. I never said or implied anything of the sort. It is an easy thing to argue against, though, so I can see why you really would like me to have said that.
Dear America,
Your prevailing attitudes towards guns and healthcare are fucking ludicrous.
Smugly,
An American
I was being serious, and I note you have yet to learn any manners.
We were killing them and nicking their stuff. We were utter shits in a lot of ways, don’t think anyone would ever claim otherwise. We did it with style though…and cricket.
I’m not American. Try again.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree. I like my pizza wood-fired and not the size of a car tyre.

Well, the day has finally come. Never thought I’d say this, but I agree with you 100%. A small, wood fired pizza with and made and hand tossed crust is by far the best way to have pizza ever invented. ![]()
As to the OP, you really need to cut the English a break…they are fighting tooth and nail to hold together the whole UK thingy and keep it from flying apart so they really need something to be all smug and superior about. I mean, they are Europeans, after all, so if they can’t be smug and superior over someone it really bums them out, ya know? ![]()
I’m being serious when I tell you this: You’re the least interesting person in the thread and I find interacting with you not to be worth my time. Have a good day.
FWIW, it bloody does, read it out to the other half for a good laugh ![]()

As a Scot, I am legally bound to come in at this point and inform you that you are making that mistake common to the ignorant American of confusing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with one of the smaller countries England, that makes up our great nation. Think of us as a United States of the British Isles with four smaller states if that helps, and you’ll realise that England /= the UK in the same way that Nebraska /= USA.
No need to thank me, I’m happy to help educate you!
