I was finally able to watch this movie in its entirety this weekend, and very good it was, despite showing outmoded techniques of dealing with the mentally ill. I know it was written by a woman who had in real life gone to a mental institution.
But now, a question. Just what condition did Virginia Cunningham (i.e., the author) suffer from? If it was schizophrenia, which her “hearing voices” seemed to indicate, she would not be cured in the end.
They never named her illness in the movie, and I can find nothing by Googling.
