Both the song title and the band name are initialisms.
T.S.O.P. was an abbreviation for The Sound of Philadelphia, a soul-rock genre of music with its own distinctive sound and considered by many to have been a seminal part of disco. The musical group itself was made up of more than 30 studio musicians based at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios, and MFSB stood for Mother-f⁎⁎⁎ing Son-of-a-Bitch, an expression which was used among the musicians to compliment a colleague’s musical prowess (it was later cleaned up to Mother Father Sister Brother for public consumption).
