Stealing a question from a friends Facebook status that I am too dumb to answer.
You have a song stuck in your head. As you play the song in your head, you realise that you are “playing” it in your head in the right key. If you tried to sing the song, you could not sing it in key (perhaps you could, doesnt really matter) but in your head it is in the right key.
The question is, why is this?
Does your memory just have perfect recall of hearing this song and is replaying the audio in your head so to speak?
Or are you actually off-key, and your brain is just telling you it sounds right to keep you happy?
Or is there something else? Its a vague question I know, so feel free to run with it where-ever, but its been bugging me all day.
Why would you mental recall be different from the actual song? I don’t think the song in your head is “sung” differently (it’s the band, not you singing, right?) so why would it be “played” differently?
Yeah, generally, I guess. I do not have absolute pitch, and it gets complicated since so many radio tunes have the pitches and speeds adjusted. Yeah, maybe, I guess. At least it’s in the ballpark, the few times I care enough to learn the tune and compare it to the original record (which isn’t all that often FWIW).
I’m a reasonable musician, but I don’t have perfect pitch. The songs in my head, so far as I can tell, are close to the right key, but they’re not always the right key. They might be a half step or whole step off (or even more, for all I know. I don’t exactly check every time I have a song in my head. I just know that I’ve sometimes tried to remember a song from my memory, it’s been off by up to a whole tone.)

J/K - The songs in my head are always in the correct key. I hear them exactly as done by the original artists. Sometimes I switch artists or even use my own “inside voice”. Inside my head is a real fun place.
