The sorry state of British politics (Anti-semitism and racism edition)

Ever heard of The Holocaust?

Islam is not a race. Is a religion which has members brown, white, black, yellow, and even red.

But so-called progressives care about every other small group, and are largely right to. Also, Jews are winners who achieve things too (unlike the CTists who hate them)

It’s not only possible but commonplace, though not on this message board and not in the US media.

That’s because the American people, not simply “the media” or “the Israel lobby,” Americans of all stripes see thru anti-Israel sentiment; they’re hypocritical, obsessive, racist, and pro-terror. America, as Israel, knows what its like to have stuff blown up to the sound of guys yelling “Allahu Akbar.”

It’s not “anti-Israeli”. That’s like being “anti-American” because you didn’t like GWBs policies.

No one is stupid enough to think that, are they.

Calling for the ethnic cleansing of six million Jews is the equivalent of criticizing George Bush?

No, disagreeing with current Israeli policies or their current leadership is the equivalent of criticizing George Bush. It’s only insane people who think criticizing Israel or their government is anti semite and supportive of ethnic cleansing.

Yes, but we’re discussing a Labour MP who called for ethnic cleansing, not someone who just said nasty things about Netanyahu.

We’ve also had at least one Doper insist he sees nothing anti-Semitic about such calls.

People seem to want to pretend Shah and Livingston were condemned for completely different things than they were criticized for.

Seems to have been a reflection of early returns from Conservative-leaning areas such as Bexley & Bromley - someone put in those numbers and the charts reflected it as a total. The dangers of graphs linked to incomplete data.

Yes, the responses by the Islamaphobe contingent have been hysterical in both senses of the word. Paul Golding of Britain First refused to face Khan during the declaration of results and his acceptance speech, choosing instead to face the back of the stage and cementing his status as a backward-looking man for a backward-looking party.

There’s so much idiocy to choose from but my favourite this morning is from EDL founder Tommy Robinson who circulated “before and after” pictures of Sadiq Khan’s wife - the “Before” picture showing her uncovered and the “After” picture showing her with full head covering, alleging all sort of hypocrisy and creeping Islamism. Except that the woman in the “After” pictures" wasn’t Khan’s wife; she was emel Media Editor and CEO Sarah Joseph, who happened to be sitting behind Khan at an event in some of the selectively-cropped photos. Robinson naturally took responsibility for the error and apologised, by which I mean that he LOLed and blamed an administrator for it. Still, the meme has got legs so if you see it please note that it is entirely bullshit.

Meanwhile Sadiq Khan celebrated the rise of Londonistan in one of his first public appearances as Mayor… which was to attend a Yom HaShoah commemoration.

What are you talking about?

I expect he’s talking about Naz Shah’s Facebook post sbout Israel from 2014, which has recently been a thing.

Can’t be that because (a) nothing about it suggests “ethnic cleansing” and (b) if it did she would have been prosecuted under hate speech laws.

Then respectfully you don’t know what the term means.

Respectfully, I’ll defer to the law rather than random bloke on the internet.

Wait…you don’t think that moving the entire Jewish population out of Israel and re-locating them to the US is ethnic cleansing?? Seriously?

Actually we’re discussing a labour MP who retweeted a post made by Norman Finkelstein.

http://normanfinkelstein.com/2014/08/04/solution-for-israel-palestine-conflict‏/

Are you suggesting that Norman Finkelstein is proposing the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the area?

And this is the precise point. Whenever someone points out just how hideously expensive Israel’s policies in Palestine are, both in terms of human life and resources, or the relative numbers of deaths on the two sides, the go to defence is antisemitism. Finkelstein’s post is quite clearly a parody of those who suggest the Palestinians should leave the region, but somehow it’s ethnic cleansing when the suggestion is that it’s non Muslims who should leave. Go figure.

“According to Jewish law, gentiles should not live in the Land of Israel,” Yosef said Saturday in a sermon. “If a gentile does not agree to take on the seven Noahide Laws, we should send him to Saudi Arabia. When the true and complete redemption arrives, that is what we will do.”

What does that score on your ethnic cleansing scale?

If this guy is saying that no one but Jews should be in the area it would be exactly the same thing. I’m unsure why you think that I think that if it’s a Jewish guy proposing it (against Palestinians or any non-Jew) it’s different than if another Jewish guy proposes the opposite and some lady re-tweets it that there is a difference. If someone puts forth the idea that an entire ethnic group should be purged from an area, by whatever means, it’s ethnic cleansing. Right?

Norm Finkelstein is a known self-hater.

Yitzhak Yosef is a racist piece of shit. What’s your point?

An Israeli or a Christian or anyone saying no one but Jews should be there, or that those who do must follow explicitly religiously based laws*… scores badly. Likewise anyone, Muslim, Christian, or Jewish, saying no Jews, scores badly. I don’t care who is saying it or what that person is known to be or not to be. They are scum in both cases.

No doubt there are Israelis and non-Israeli Zionists who are very prejudiced against Palestinians and perhaps more broadly Arabs or Muslims and make statements of that sort. Those who are should be condemned by all. Not the broad group called “the Jewish people” or even Zionists. Someone who does that is scum.

No doubt there are Palestinians and those who state they support them (including Christians and Jews) who make anti-Semitic comments and some who are anti-Semites. Those who are should be condemned by all. Not the broad group of those who support what gets called “the Palestinian cause” or all Muslims or all Arabs. Someone who does that is scum.

Statements like this

deserve to be condemned. Period. They are despicable statements and stand on their own as such.

It’s really hard to condemn bigotry while being bigoted yourself.
