The (Southern Hemisphere) Rugby Championship

TheRugby Championshipis the new name for the old Tri-Nations (which was certainly in need of a tune-up), now that Argentina has joined the competition.

Round 3 is on this weekend with New Zealand hosting Argentina and Australia hosting South Africa. So far New Zealand has beaten Australia away (27-19) and at home (22-0), and South Africa has beaten Argentina at home (27-6) but were lucky to escape with a 16-16 draw in Argentina.

None of the teams are looking that great to be honest, the All Blacks have won both their games while making too many errors. the Springboks look ponderous, the Wallabies a bit of a shambles and Los Pumas are good in the tight and have a decent defence but lack any gamebreakers out wide.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how competitive the Argentinans are (at least at home) and think they’re a good chance when they host Australia. They might give the All Blacks a fright as well, but I doubt they’ll get their first ever win againast the All Blacks this year.

Any other dopers care to comment?
