Okay, on the strength of the recommendations here, we watched The Sting last night. It was great. I really appreciated that they let the con unfold without telling the audience what the plan was. I did think the FBI was a fakeout at first, but Redford’s acting had me doubting myself so it wasn’t until the final shootout that I came back to, “Oh, it’s the scam.” Really beautifully done. I agree the hit woman thing was a bit shoehorned in. A friend of mine also pointed out that the hit woman would have been considered very plain to be a love interest for Redford, so it creates some mental discongruence.
We also thought Redford could be easily recast with Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt kinda looks like Redford but his character in that movie, the humorous physicality, was very Pitt. I wonder if Redford was an influence on Pitt.
I’m gonna be honest, Paul Newman knocked my socks off. The nuance in his acting is so good and he was a very handsome man. Couldn’t take my eyes off of him. That poker scene was great. What a hook!

Redford/Newman movies were contests as to who could out-handsome the other without trying.
I can tell Robert Redford is unusually handsome, but I don’t see it in Newman. He just looks like a normal guy to me. Guess he’s not my type.
Trivia: she was supposed to be “Jugs” in Mother, Jugs & Speed but couldn’t reach an agreement regarding her salary. So they got Raquel instead.

I feel the same way about Redford/Pitt. Fine acting, though.
I’m with Llama. I love Newman’s acting and his ability to play Everyman. Like Tom Hanks is to me. But when I see Newman I’m not struck with handsome. But I am when I see a younger Redford and Pitt.
And he makes a mean salad dressing.
And he drove a mean racecar.

Newman and Redford both got better looking as they got older. I watched Barefoot in the Park a long time ago and my first reaction was That lead actor is going to be Robert Redford when he grows up. And I was right.
Thought I’d put these here for a fair comparison. Newman is about 10 years older than Redford, who is about 25 years older than Pitt. Here are all three at around 30 (give or take a couple of years).

Back in the 80’s Michigan was celebrating its’ 150th anniversary and the relatives of celebrities from Michigan were making commercials saying how the famous family members were being invited back. I saw Newman’s brother, and omg he was just about as good looking as Paul.
Also, Madonna’s brother was a hunk too.
