Rookie mistake. Everyone knows you don’t cite the online article directly. You cite its sources.

Interestingly, just a couple of days ago I found a citation from the SDMB in a book I’m reading. The book is Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O’Neil. The citation is in the footnotes on page 248 of that book, and the footnote is to something said on page 188 of that book. The thing quoted is in post #1 in this thread:

Obama re-election campaign is growing the analytics team

However, the footnote doesn’t give that link. Instead, it links to the archive site. The link given is this one:

What the author of the book is trying to quote is the LinkedIn webpage whose URL is given in post #1 of the thread. However, it’s apparently impossible to reach that webpage unless you’re a LinkedIn member. So, instead, the author quotes a piece of the LinkedIn webpage that’s quoted in post #1 of the thread.

I know we were cited in a magazine article about Breaking Bad. IIRC, it wasn’t used to back up a fact, but as a speculation about the show. We were also cited in a XKCD “What If” book.

As a side note, I have a co-worker who tends not believe anything he reads on the internet, convinced everyone is just a troll making up fake info. One day he asked me a question, I answered and not believing me he googled it. He then said “Ok, I see it now, you’re right” and read me what he was looking at to which I replied “uhhh, who wrote that post” as he looked at the name he realized it was me. I gave him a hard time about that. He didn’t believe me when I told him in person, but believed me when I wrote it on the internet.

There really is no reason to bump this thread, other than noting that… for some reason… it got cited for a paper delivered at the 2012 International Communications Conference:

I have no idea, but if so, my guess would be that one of the posters in this thread is a likely candidate for being responsible for the inclusion of the cite.

Googling further, I’m finding citations to the SDMB in a number of scholarly (for varying amounts of “scholarly”) sources, including named citations for Sam Stone, CK Dexter Haven, and Gronk in the book Performance in a Militarized Culture. Also, citations to SDMB threads can be found at the US Army (PDF, pg51), someone who cited our research into the nutritional value of rats (Page 98), our discussion of Waldorf Schools, a treatise on the racism of Kant, and more, I’m sure.
