The Straight Dope used as a cite.

The Anti-Semetic Origins of “Hip Hip Hooray!”

The Straight Dope is cited in this article.

I doubt that its a first but its cool nonetheless!

I’ve had students use the site as a cite on papers before. One even cited a Staff Report I had contributed to! I told them not to cite idiots on the internet in their paper.

But how great is the wisdom of a crowd of idiots? The pedantic horde on here ensure far more stringent scrutiny than any peer review.

Rookie mistake. Everyone knows you don’t cite the online article directly. You cite its sources.

I’ve had somebody on this board cite a Wikipedia article I wrote to me.

Did you argue with them over it?
:dubious:

You have to ask?
Have you been here before?

Interestingly, just a couple of days ago I found a citation from the SDMB in a book I’m reading. The book is Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O’Neil. The citation is in the footnotes on page 248 of that book, and the footnote is to something said on page 188 of that book. The thing quoted is in post #1 in this thread:

However, the footnote doesn’t give that link. Instead, it links to the archive site. The link given is this one:

https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-617517.html

What the author of the book is trying to quote is the LinkedIn webpage whose URL is given in post #1 of the thread. However, it’s apparently impossible to reach that webpage unless you’re a LinkedIn member. So, instead, the author quotes a piece of the LinkedIn webpage that’s quoted in post #1 of the thread.

Towards the end of this thread I digressed from the topic, noting all the citations to this board I kept finding.

I know we were cited in a magazine article about Breaking Bad. IIRC, it wasn’t used to back up a fact, but as a speculation about the show. We were also cited in a XKCD “What If” book.

As a side note, I have a co-worker who tends not believe anything he reads on the internet, convinced everyone is just a troll making up fake info. One day he asked me a question, I answered and not believing me he googled it. He then said “Ok, I see it now, you’re right” and read me what he was looking at to which I replied “uhhh, who wrote that post” as he looked at the name he realized it was me. I gave him a hard time about that. He didn’t believe me when I told him in person, but believed me when I wrote it on the internet.

Bringing this from that other thread…

Pedantic horde.

Heh heh.

THERE’S the new SDMB T-Shirt…
