I recently got an email from an email address ending with the .su suffix. I know this isn’t fake, as the headers check out as legit. In addition, IANA’s ccTLD list doesn’t show anything for the .su TLD. It shows .se as legit, but no .su anywhere.
Could it be that the mail server made a typo, or am I just hallucinating?
.su used to be for the Soviet Union. Now there’s .ru for Russia. Maybe .su is for the other former Soviet Republics.
Yep, it looks like they stopped registering new .su domains after the Soviet Union breakup, but many of the domains that were already registered are still around. See this message for more explanation.

Oh, I could think up a ton of jokes. What happened if someone in the USSR tried to gain access to a forbidden website? Did they get a popup saying, “Jerking off to pictures of capitalist vermin is a bad thing. Try filling your hand with pictures of Helga and her magic tractor.”? Is it true that Steve Case was their webmaster?
I could go on and on, really.
It’s probably best you don’t go on and on. Perpetuating negative stereotypes could just mean you end up in the pit.
Take it from someone who has been to the USSR, Primaflora…each and every last one of those “negative stereotypes” was dead-on accurate.
If you’d been to the USSR, then why didn’t you know that .su was the Soviet suffix? And if you were there prior to .su becoming the Soviet suffix, don’t you think your picture of the place must be really outdated? Tell us where you are from and we’ll see if we can come up with something offensive and ignorant to say about it. I’m from Melbourne, Australia. Maybe my country has also disgusted and offended you? If it has, then please give us your opinion on it too.
