The Taxonomy of Manliness - an Observation

I’ve also heard dudeliness. I’ve also heard dudely used. “Man, did you see that? He was totally dudely.”

From what I’ve gathered, a **Ron **is a specific variant of Douchebag.

From my perspective, the best way to quantify the state of being a dude is by the way you extend Dude.

  • Dude
  • Duude
  • Duuuuuuude

From there, you can append suffixes or words like “totally,” “exactly,” and “that’s what I’m sayin’”

We should pause for a moment and regard the concept of douchiness. It feels like it emerged over the past decade or so, like that extra taste they came up with in Japan - *umame *- to join sour, sweet, bitter and salty. It can range from “don’t be a douche” to being a complete Douchebag, but it has that quality of trying to be something you’re clearly not, in an arrogant sort of way. It’s a great word.

This needs a Venn diagram.

I’ve never been clear on the meaning of “stand-up guy”. Is it someone who can take care of himself in a stand-up fistfight, or is it just someone you can rely on?

Well, above, I describe a Stand Up Guy as basically a guy who’s got your back, so I would go with the latter.

Handling yourself in a fistfight is part of the Badass branch of this hierarchy…or Venn diagram…or whatever one could use to map all this out.

Yeah, a Dude isn’t that reliable. He may intend to be, but you know, man, shit happens, people forget, the dealer gets a new shipment…

Dude, he flaked.

But he didn’t bail.

I feel like drinking a bottle of scotch and punching a gorilla in the face.

Hmm. Not something a Stand-Up Guy would likely do.

Just sayin’
