The telemarketing industry just doesn't get it.

I think that telemarketers have one of the worst jobs on the face of the earth. What other job involves making people angry 90% of the time? I just hate constantly getting interrupted by the phone ringing 3-5 times every night, especially when it’s a recording or dead air! It will be nice to have an opt out list that must be used or a fine is issued.

Although, I have such a difficult to pronounce last name, not to me, it’s only 2 syllables, but most people can’t pronounce it, so I just tell them, “no one lives here by that name” and I have been getting less calls since I started doing that.

Honestly, the do not call list is the exact opposite of how to solve this problem. What we needed was an opt in list. 100% straightforward, a list of folks that want calls. Also, I would make auto dialers (or predictive dialers) illegal.

If my time in the telemarketing industry taught me anything, it is this: QUANTITY IS GOD.

A good salesman can sell anything to anyone, sure… but he expects to be paid like a professional.

A roomful of chumps, on the other hand, can reach out and touch thousands of people in one night, and out of that thousand people, at least five percent are BOUND to buy something.

Quantity matters. Therefore, the emphasis is on hitting as many people as possible, as fast and hard as possible. Forget finesse. Forget salesmanship. Just read the script and hammer them hard and move on to the next number!

The very idea of a “do not call” list is a blasphemy to the people who make their money doing this. What, a list of people we MUST TAKE OFF OUR ROLLS? Horrors! It cuts down on our QUANTITY!

Now, it used to be that the consumer, the customer… the VOTER… was an important guy, here. But in today’s market-driven economy, in today’s political climate, the large powerful corporation is much more important than any individual voter, or group of voters, or population of voters, or… well, they’re just more important, that’s all.

And it’s perfectly understandable that they should sue to prevent the government from cutting into their take. After all, this is a Republican administration, and one that’s notoriously business-friendly. Why should they NOT sue?

(Well, because we hate them and don’t want to hear from them as we try to relax and eat our supper, but if THAT mattered in the least…)

As much as I’d like to trash the Republicans, it’s nice to see the government guys all get together and say “Hey! This is really obnoxious!” and do something about it. When even Bush doesn’t like your business practices, I’d say you’re doomed.
