Angua and I were discussing …um… oh yeah! working late! Last week. And Wee Free Men came up. A week before that, several people chimed in on a totally unrelated thread about fellow dopesters who are Pratchett fans. I was just in MPSIMS just now, and saw yet another aside, this time to Ponder Stibbons , to the effect of “hooray, I’m not the only one (fan) here!”
So…Here we go. Hello. My name is Maureen, and I am hooked on Terry Pratchett. It has been just over three days since my last Terry Pratchett fix, in the form of Witches Abroad, paperback, and I am currently wondering if there will ever be another Rincewind book.
I know there is no hope for me, I will never reform. I will remain a Terry Pratchettaholic until the day I choke on a pretzel from reading something like:
He shows up at the end of Pyamids to process all the mummies.
I’m almost sure DEATH appears in all of Pterry’s Discworld novels.
As much as I like his existing characters, I like it how he’s still developing new main characters to bounce of his old existing ones - especially in ‘The Truth’. I can almost see it becoming like the Marvel University, where previous main characters are bumbing into old ones.
Still want to know what happened to Teppic though…
I just read my first Terry Pratchett book last week, well co-written anyway, The Good Omen. I loved it. An angel, a demon, and the son of Satan…and it such an incredibly fun read. The footnotes are almost as much fun as anything. After reading this one, there will be more to follow I promise.
I am a Neil Gaiman fan, from the Sandman series of graphic novels. That’s originally why I picked up the book. Still, I can’t wait to try out some of Pratchett’s others. Suggestions for the new fan appreciated!
I’m pretty sure he’s in there somewhere–possibly when Pteppic’s father dies. My copy is in storage, though, so someone else will have to check up on that.
I just finished re-reading Wee Free Men for the third time. The first time I tend to rush through his books like a kid in a candy shop. It isn’t until the third or fourth time that I start to catch the little bits. I love, love, love Pterry.
It was the best introduction I could have had. It had Susan Sto Helit bashing the monsters in the closet, Death taking the Hogfather’s place, and a nod to the mythic origins of the season.
I was hooked.
My favorite sub-world is that of the witches. I want to be Nanny Ogg in my next life (no kids in this life, so no daughters-in-law to boss around. ) Some day I want to learn all the verses of the hedgehog song.
I love the character of Death. I love the Librarian.
Sorry, but the characters of the Watch just don’t do it for me.
They’re all memorable characters, but tonight I love Vetinari and Leonard of Quirm the best, for some reason.
Leonard: “I’m calling this the Very-Fast-Coffee machine.”
Vetinari: “And that’s today’s invention, is it?”
Leonard: “Well, yes. It would have been a scale model of a device for reaching the moon and other celestial bodies, but I was thirsty.”
I just finished reading Pyramids. Death shows up when Teppic’s father dies and also rounds up all the mummies.
My first Discworld book was Mort. Death is still my favorite character, but I also love Vimes. And Nanny Ogg’s cat. Especially in Witches Abroad. Oh, and Ridcully is great, too.
I wonder how long it’ll be until the first Mocha Velocita, or Expresso shop shows up in Ankh Morpork? What’ll it be called? Sundoe’s?
I can imagine Nobby getting addicted to it. Well, that and wearing a dress, which I’d really rather not imagine, thanks.
Man I love those books. I personally also enjoy Rincewind. I like 'em all really, though the Librarian and the Luggage are among my favorite characters.
Gee, I read Good Omens because I liked Pratchett and discovered Gaiman. My first book was Carpe Jugulum. I saw the title in the new books rack, and it was too bad a pun to leave alone. I wouldn’t recommend it as a first book because more of it makes sense if you’ve read the previous witch books. You don’t have to have read Small Gods, but it doesn’t hurt.
I like most of the ongoing characters and loved Small Gods and Pyramids as well.
It took me many months, but I’d finally managed to purchase and read all the “real” Discworld books. Of course he had to keep writing them, so I’m behind again. Damn you Pratchett. Damn you!
I also got my brother hooked on them, which is stunning actually, since he usually just re-reads Tolkien obsessively.
I can’t understand people like this. For me it was a chore just to read it once. My parents must have re-read it like 15 times. I don’t think I will ever read it again.
