I love that trailer. Fading out with, “We found something in the ice…we found something…”
Ooooooh! And then they could have the female lead die of an allergic reaction!
Then they could make a Predalien that’s really a thing. And then somehow assimilate a human. Where’s a hack director when we need one?
You know, wasn’t that pretty much the point of the Alien vs. Predator franchise? Those two species plus Space Marines? And then they move the films to modern earth…
Beats me. To know that I would’ve had to watch them.
Yeah, I called that in post #9.
This may be a slight hijack, but here I go! There are only two things I didn’t like about The Thing:
-
The stupid UFO flying in at the very beginning. It’s a cheesy special effect that’s totally out of place, and serves as a spoiler, detracting slightly from the mysteries that unfold.
-
The computer prediction sequence–what is it basing that data on? And why is it presenting the data as if it had AI.
Cut those two scenes and the movie would be perfect.
Are you talking about John Carpenter’s version? I don’t remember seeing a UFO.
It’s the first shot of the film. Check out the link Tamerlane posted above: it starts at 1:20, just as soon as the credits stop.
I remember listening to the commentary track years ago, about how they did the title graphic after the UFO crash. Apparently, they had it cut out of some paper or something, with another sheet of paper or plastic some distance behind it, and a bright light behind that. Then they started the camera, and set fire to the barrier between the title cutout and the light so it burned away. Really cool visual.
Wow. I totally forgot that.
Exactly. I did too until I watched it a few years later. It’s so forgettable, but also terrible.
No, the whole franchise. The video games that were actually good, the comics, etc. Not those movies which are rumored to exist. Those completely took it out of space and into Antarctica or some crap (where have we heard that one?), where apparently there are alien pyramids.
Since I haven’t seen Carpenter’s movie in a number of years I went ahead and watched it tonight. I think it’s still a good movie but the special effects are horribly dated.
I can live with the misquote, but the name is Mac, not Jack. Short for McReady. One of my favorite movies, wart and all.

You’re in good company. If I correctly remember the DVD commentary, Kurt Russell shares your appreciation for that moment.
.
facepalm I even knew that. His last name is a few letters off from mine.
