Well, the people telling me this, were also the same people who were perpetuating the urban legend that AC/DC were actually homos, due to their name back in the early 80’s, they claimed that they “went both ways”. Then they would tell me about Ozzy biting the head off a bat, and play me a tape about backmasking from a “noted” religous scholar, all in the same breath.

I think the real question here is “Why are so many people convinced that rock lyrics have hidden or secret meanings?”

It means exactly what it says. If you’re looking for poetic allusion and obscured meanings, AC/DC lyrics are not going to reward you.

My point was that the meaning isn’t hidden, it’s there in plain sight. Along with, in that particular example, the unforgivable use of given in place of givin’. (It was later corrected on Australian copies of the album, not sure if they fixed it on other countries’ copies.)

No, I got your point, just messin’ around.

The title was “Given…” on the U.S. vinyl I bought in about… 1988-ish. It MAY have been fixed when I bought the CD about seven years later. Wikipedia is unclear as to specifics.

On 20 January 1982, Osbourne bit the head off a bat he thought was rubber while performing at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa. Rolling Stone magazine in 2004 ranked this incident number two on its list of “Rock’s Wildest Myths.” While the Rolling Stone article stated the bat was alive, the teen who threw it onto the stage said it was brought to the show dead. According to Osbourne himself in the booklet to the 2002 edition of Diary of a Madman, the bat was not only alive but also managed to bite him, resulting in his having to take rabies shots.
