I have no doubt that Hegseth literally didn’t say, “Bomb them a second time!” What did happen was he gave some initial order, that sounded a lot like “Kill them all!”, and then the officer in charge was left to figure out the details. What to do about those two people who survived the first strike? Well, you were told to kill them all, weren’t you? So get on with it, and that officer orders the second strike.
Word gets to Hegseth, and he chortles and says, “Hey, man, I never ordered him to kill the survivors! He’s gone rogue, he misunderstood my orders, I never said that!” But at the end of the day, everyone under him understood that he wanted them all dead, even if he never literally gave the order to kill the survivors. If anything ever ends up in court, it’s the lower ranks that will be left holding the bag.
Let’s hope he was dumb enough to give orders in writing.

Vance needs what, Trump to live past election day 2026 or sometime in 2027 to lock in “President” for the remainder of this term? Can I dream of a Dem Congress that gets to choose the “acting president / President”? till 2029?
That’s not how it works. The reason the date matters to Vance is that if he serves more than two years of Trump’s term, he’s only eligible to be elected for one more term, so he only gets maybe 7 years, max. If Trump kicks it with just under two years left, though, Vance can be elected twice, giving him possibly ten years in office.

In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Even the 22nd amendment makes a distinction:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
So if Trump were merely in a coma for the last few years of his term, Vance would be an Acting President, but if Trump dies, he’s just President.
I suppose the term is Jan 22nd or whenever the inauguration was. So, in theory, if the Reaper comes soon, Vance is President and can only run one more time? So something changed, as JFK died two months short of two years and LBJ could have run again in 1968? The 22nd seems to be addressing exactly that.
