I once was sitting next to some MAGAs (maybe two years ago) and listened to them go on about how Pelosi was to blame for the Patriot Act–since they apparently thought she was the Speaker at the time and it was her bill–and how the Dems have been abusing it and spying on patriotic Republicans ever since.
I think they may have been confusing the Patriot Act with FISA, since Trump claimed his campaign and supporters were being illegally spied upon by the FBI using FISA warrants (or was it without warrants?). I forget the exact details of the claims except that it was the most egregious abuse of government power in the history of the world. Or, it was. Until the next thing Trump didn’t like. And FISA dates back to 1978. Maybe Pelosi is able to time-travel.
FISA itself dates to 1978, as J. Edgar Hoover was no longer alive and running the FBI and doing whatever wiretapping or surveillance he wished. It was a post-watergate oversight thing as well, though there was no return of taping Oval Office conversations till Musk’s son planted some bugs there a couple weeks ago.
