If Canada did become a state, Congress and the electoral college would need to be completely reproportioned. Canada would be the largest state by population, followed by California. Republicans might not hold the House or the presidency again for ages.
Canada’s size would give it strong influence in U.S. politics. It might well be in their interest to ecome the 51st state.
In the remote chance they’d actually want to join with the US, I’m sure they’d want to become the 51st through 60th states (plus three territories). Not that I expect this any time either soon or later.
