My BIL, from South Africa, can speak fluent Afrikaans.
(OFF TOPIC) It’s kind of ridiculous that I feel more fluent in Bahasa Indonesia despite having visited twice, and each time for 4 weeks; and French, which I studied at school for 4 years.
But even though I live in South Africa now, my best efforts at speaking it meet the limits of Kaapse Taal, a distinctive slang version linked to Cape Town’s high density, poorer suburbs, the underworld and (some level of) criminality. (Tsotsie taal, which directly translates into “theif speak”, which as far as I know orginated inthe mines of Johannesburg)
I understand Egte Afrikaanse (even if I can’t spell it without Google) but struggle to speak.

Is you BIL an English South African or an Afrikaans South African? Because lots of English South Africans, from the more English bits of the country, are not fluent beyond whats needed to finish high school.

My BIL speaks Afrikaans. As far as I know, he can speak Afrikaans with anybody in South Africa. He also speaks impeccable English.

Im trying to determine his ethnicity. And to point out that there is a large cultural diversity among white South Africans. Not surprising considering the country is A massive, B formed out of multiple seperate colonies and local kingdoms, many of which were at war with eachother in the decades before the Union was formed.
Not all white South Africans are of Afrikaans descent, only 50%ish are, and the rest are other colonial types mostly British.
Trump couldn’t care less about saving the government money (nor could he care less about anything that doesn’t personally benefit himself, for that matter).
The government cost-cutting measures are solely about hurting people and getting rid of things he doesn’t like, and receiving adulation from his base. Nothing more, nothing less.
