The Trump deportation news thread

I’d settle for a Sulla- style proscription :smiling_face_with_horns:

Is hiw brow furrowed? Is he deeply concerned?

What do you expect Schumer to do, within the current US political system and its (mostly now non-existent) checks and balances between the branches of government? Unless you expect him to lead a revolution, what else can he do except to continue to publicize the extremism of this fascist regime and hope that Congress can grow some spine?

The phrase is, “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” Schumer is doing a very good job of getting out of the way.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has broken its silence, conceding its agents were responsible for the arrest of two men during a raid on a downtown Charlottesville courthouse and promising that the bystanders who questioned those agents will be prosecuted.

ICE also blasted the area’s top prosecutor, who has announced he will be investigating the raid, as “posturing for the media.”

God, I hope the ‘top prosecutor’ brings charges against these monsters.

Pretty sure free speech still allows me to yell “fascist” at a fascist, as long as I don’t interfere with his fascism.

Sure, you ought to be able to yell it. And, hopefully, some court would eventually determine as much.

But in today’s climate, it would not surprise me at all if you were arrested, and had to expend considerable effort, expense, and inconvenience defending what ought to be considered your clear cut right. This administration’s consistent practice seems to consistently arrest/harm FIRST, and force the injured party to challenge the state action.

That’s true, but that’s how the civil legal system works in general. If you are wronged, you can sue, and after the expenditure of a great deal of time, trouble, and money, some of which is reimbursed if you win, you collect a judgement.

For some reason, this works better for people with lots of spare time and money than it does for poor or working-class people.

The only difference now is that more and more people are being wronged, in more ways, many of which are petty, racist, and otherwise more obviously wrong.

Although you say “the only difference” is the increased number of people wronged, I suggest the petty/racist/obviously wrong nature of the harm is a separate difference. So they are different in BOTH number AND type.

And I suggest they are also - um - escalating things more rapidly. In most legal matters there generally is a gradual ramping up of action: (in very general terms) maybe start with a polite conversation; followed by a letter; followed by a more stern letter; followed by an order; perhaps followed by initiating a legal proceeding - and if none of that works - an arrest. Whereas these thugs are skipping all of the initial steps and going right to the nuclear action.

Yeh, going right to the nuclear option even when they’re going after the wrong people. Summary: just moved into rented home, ICE smashes in in early a.m., herds mother and daughters outside in their underwear, in the rain, trashes house. takes phones, laptops, all cash as “evidence”, even though they’re citizens and the warrant was for someone else. Oh, and invaders are refusing to return their stuff.

Greyhound enforcing due process

My Trump cultist friend claims that the Immigration Reform Act signed by Bill Clinton removes the right of due process for people who are in the country illegally. Yes, he signed the Act; but I find it hard to believe that the Act contains anything so unconstitutional. Is there anything in there to that effect?

It wouldn’t matter, because anything unconstitutional is illegal. http://www.uscis.gov/ilink/docView/PUBLAW/HTML/PUBLAW/0-0-0-10948.html doesn’t seem to contain the words “due process,” and skimming through it, they certainly seem to be presuming use of the court system.

Grrrrrrrr.

Significant legal consequences for trump?? Right. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Damn! That Newsweek site is almost impossible to read, what with all the ads and annoying pop-ups!

could have significant legal consequences.

Who else peed themselves?

What an idiot. Of course he has always had the power. No one with a brain has ever doubted that. Instead, it was dithering over the meaning of facilitate vs - what? Effectuate?

I imagine Chump’s lawyers (so ugly that I basically equate the DoJ with Chump’s personal legal whores) will say he wasn’t under oath and is such a bullshitter that his comments aren’t to be taken seriously.

What a world we are in!

It depends on your definition of the word “is.”

^ This. What legal consequences? Arrest him for contempt of court? That’s not going to happen. Impeach him, with contempt of court being one of the (many) charges? Not until after 2026, if then, and he won’t be convicted. He’s thumbed his nose at the Supreme Court of the United States, and wiped His incontinent arse with the United States Constitution. And He’ll get away with it.

I think you’re both misreading the article. In this case “legal consequences” means the outcome of the court case under discussion.
