This thread is for discussion of Trumps attempts to deport human beings from the USA.
We all know what’s going on. It’s scarcely worth repeating it. But for the record his stated intention is to deport over 20 million people. Realistic estimates of the total number of undocumented immigrants is about 14 million. That means he intends to deport a minimum of 6 million with every legal right to be in the country.
People who were granted visas under Biden will have their visas revoked, and be expelled.
People that have been granted US citizenship will have it revoked and be expelled.
He is trying to eliminate birthright citizenship. People born in the USA and US citizens under the Constitution will be declared illegal, and expelled.
He believes that immigrants are illegal if he as President declares them to be illegal.
This is going to be a massive abuse of human rights. He has been compared to Hitler, and I think the comparison is justified.
I think Trump’s next trial will be for crimes against humanity.
I intend this thread to help keep track of the various developments. Post news stories. Discuss what’s happening. Don’t spend too much time ranting about how bad it is, please. I don’t want news updates to get lost in the general discussion.
I agree with the former. I am doubtful that Trump will ever be held to materially account for any of his vast litany of wrongdoings, much less crimes against humanity.
There is no physical way Trump is going to be able to round up 20 million people with the current resources available in DHS and DOJ no matter how much he wills it. Which is not to say that he isn’t going to do a massive scope of harm and injustice in the process. This is mostly performative cruelty for the sake of looking ‘tough’ like the strongmen he so adores and gushes over. He will make the borders even more porous because of how much effort is put into this, harm national security, and further damage the reputation of the United States with critical allies.
As has been said in previous threads, the US doesn’t have the ability to house 20 million illegal immigrants, even temporarily, and you can’t simply drop them out of airplanes. All 20 million will have to be accepted by some country or another.
This is just a ploy to get Mexico and the various Central American countries to take the US immigration problem seriously. The fact that these immigrants have a legal right to seek asylum in the US is completely immaterial.
Indeed they did. Not sure how DJT got Guatemala to go along but it looks like most of the deportees in this case were Guatemalan. It will be interesting how this plays out.
Do you think non-citizen residents in USA have legal rights to be free from roundup in schools, churches and other gathering places? I’ve always believed it so but never thought to look it up. I’m seething with outrage but know it’ll probably be case by case.
100% in agreement with you. It is unlikely the Orange Idiot will successfully deport the numbers he is touting but many will flee out of fear.
Raids on schools, churches, hospitals and other places that should be sanctuaries would be outrageous. Unfortunately he is giving authorization for this to happen and it probably will. And the MAGA cultists will love it.
Undocumented immigrants which have not formally requested asylum have very few legal ‘rights’, and are subject to detention and deportation at any time with some minimal amount of due process, i.e. a hearing in a federal immigration court which formally adjudicates their status and disposition. This is not an ‘Article III’ criminal court or proceeding, and defendants do not have a legal right to counsel or appeal, although it is customary to permit the detainee to bring counsel and request an appeal if there is any question about their status. Although schools and churches are often commonly regarded as “sanctuaries” there is no legal requirement to do so, and barring action by the state courts there really isn’t any basis for refusing access by ICE or CBP agents to search for and detain undocumented immigrants.
You have to be specific. There are two types. 1 tourists and students 2 immigrants who work here.
The category 2 people may have temporary work permits. Many of those will suffer the rounding up process. Then there are people who look or sound like immigrants. One is not required to carry one’s visa with them. I had one for 10 years that was kept at home or a bank deposit box. When I was 17 I kept it with me as I went to college. I was not welathy enough to keep a safe deposit box, so it was ín my “box” in my dorm room.
If you do have a heavy accent and do not have anything but a driver’s license, you may get arrested. We will see it in the news. In many states the DMV will have the record of “citizen” or “not citizen.” But the feds do not have access to state records. It will be a mess.
But there is going to be video of immigrants being taken out of churches, arrested by people in riot gear. Those images are going to be ugly.
The true believers? They’re, and I’m not exaggerating, Nazis. They would be fine with mass death, and violating church sanctuaries will feed their bloodlust.
But other folks supported Trump reluctantly, or provisionally, or under the delusion that he was just blowing smoke. And those videos are going to be deeply troubling to some of them.
I can make no predictions on a mass scale; but I think that the resistance is going to need to be sure that those images spread widely and effectively.
“This is who he is,” needs to be the message. “Good people will resist.”
