the truth about screensavers?

Do computer monitors NEED screensavers anymore? I got this nice LCD monitor for Christmas. But for some reason the screensaver doesnt always come on. Should I be concerned? Will images burn into an LCD? Or not? And have screensavers just become some trendy thing that really isnt needed anymore…?

If your monitor automatically goes into save power mode (shuts off after 20 or so minutes) then a screen saver is not needed at all. Burnt images are found more in monochrome monitors than color ones. The intensity is greater. LCD monitors can last forever
so long as you dont poke them.

But if you like making your monitor look like an aquarium thats fine too. I have anime pin-ups on mine. It serves no technical purpose other than to perk me up.

We have had color monitors getting burned in only a couple of years ago. These were in a computer lab, and the monitors were on 24/7. Eventually, the college’s logo got burned in.

However, under normal use, it probably won’t happen. But it’s neat.

There are a lot of things that stay on the screen almost all the time, even when you’re actively using the computer. That bar thingie with the start button on it for one. If burn in was really a problem, you’d notice it even if your screensaver worked, wouldn’t you?

Well, I no longer use screen savers (roughly twice a week) just press “Sleep” on your keyboard. (well i have a compaq presario so thats what mine has.

Screensavers may be needed on older, non-power-saving monitors. No others require them.

They have become the necktie of the computer world. A fashion item, much used to display the owner’s hidden “personality”, but otherwise totally pointless.
