What the HELL was that about? I just finished reading it, and I’m thoroughly confused!

What the hell was going going?

-Why was Miles kicked out of school-what exactly did he do?
-What was in the governess’s letter that he had to tear it up?
-What was the deal with the ghosts-did they kill Miles, drive everyone mad?

Anything else you could tell me would be appreciated.

My guess (and it’s a common theory, hardly original with me) is that the governess was insane, and that her paranoid delusions led to the final tragedy.

But the story itself bored me so completely that I really didn’t care, by the time I got to the weak, ambiguous ending.

But what was the final tragedy-she killed the boy?
