Wasn’t there talk of the UP and some counties from northern Wisconsin creating their own state, “Superior”?
What I want to know is why Michigan got Isle Royale.

It’s just a pipe dream. Both Michigan and Wisconsin would have to agree to give up the territory, which ain’t going to happen.
There’s a little-known Federal law that gives odd pieces of land to Michigan. Back in the 50s there was talk of giving us Hawaii; we’ve also got somewhat of a legal claim to parts of Cape Cod and most of Guam. Puerto Rico was official ceded to Michigan in the mid-60s, but we decided against it in a landslide vote, as the residents were loathe to fully embrace pasties and deer hunting.
The clincher in the Puerto Rico deal is that the Puerto Ricans just could not get the hang of operating a sled (snowmobile to the rest of us).
Plus, most other states would be unlikely to go along with the idea even if MI and WI were willing to give up this territory. Why would the Southern states want 2 more Senators from the Midwest in Washington? This would dilute Southern influence.
I respond simply because I must post in a thread concerning the UP. Unfortunately Athena has hogged all of the anti-LP comments.
Go Packers.
I was wondering if you’d show up. C’mon, you can come up with something anti-LP, can’t you?
True story: I just got a call from some company doing a survey for the Michigan Department of Transportation. Thinking that a bit more funding for roads up here would be good, I decided to take the survey instead of hanging up on the lady. She asked me a bunch of questions, and said that every member of my household was going to receive a transportation diary which we’d use to track our driving habits.
Towards the end of the phone call, she asked what city I lived in. When I told her, she basically said “Ooops, sorry, we don’t need your info after all!”
Coincidence? I think not. No highway funding for us yoopers. We’ll just continue to use the snow machines and dogsleds.
If we can figure out some way reduce the drive time from Minneapolis to the UP, I’ll happily move up there. But the 7hr commute is a bit of a deal breaker right now. So, get those inventive, snowbound minds working.
Besides being home to much of my family, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
Tastes of Chocolate,
(who knows all the best bars in Felch, MI)
Hey, now, I’m originally from Kalamazoo, and all of my family roots for the Packers, too. Of course, we’ve got family in Green Bay, but, still, not all of us go for the Lions.
Well, sure, the Packers are winning games right now.
When they were deciding on the U.S. - Canada boundary, someone on the U.S. side drew in a bunch of fictitious islands in Lake Superior, and then got the Canadians to agree that the U.S. would get that one island, and they got the rest. I can say with absolute certainty that it’s true that I heard this from someone.
