Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that every time someone wants to sell me a TV, whether it be on a TV commercial or in print, they use a clip or still of Battlestar Galactica? Usually you get a shot of a couple of Cylon Raiders (yes, my childhood was totally wasted) with lasers blazing on the beautiful new widescreen which you could purchase for only $1,000,000, 30 days same as cash.
Now, if this is not a product of my imagination (“Remember the good old days when Battlestar Galactica was on TV…”) and others have noticed this phenomenon, why? What is it about Battlestar Galactica that makes ad types think it will sell TVs?
Dude, you really need to get a hobby or something.
Here are some WAGs to tide you over until this gets moved to IMHO:
[li]Battlestar Galactica is widely recognizable but not necessarily immediately identifiable. This is good because it makes people feel at ease (because they see something familiar) but not tied to any one particular image.[/li][li]The producers are willing to sell the rights to use scenes from it for really, really cheap.[/li][li]Because the theatrical release had such an advanced (for its time) sound setup (I’m going from memory here, but I seem to remember it being cutting-edge), it is well-suited to demonstrating the home-theatre setups now popular with people who don’t have anything better to spend their money on.[/li][li]Philips is now being run by Imperious Leader and/or Baltar.[/li]
Hope this helps.
Maybe they’re trying to hearken back to childhood, figuring you’re more likely to buy something you feel some sort of ‘attachment’ to, the attachment here being your love of BG.

Galactica was a TV show. It never had a theatrical release.
I hope we have some TV marketing types here, because I’d like to have definitive answer to this one. I’d noticed the phenomenon myself.
In the meantime, let us by all means continue to speculate. I think KneadToKnow’s second point is quite likely a major component, though there must be other cheap scenes from other familiar programs available out there. What about Knight Rider or Airwolf?
Ummm, yeah, it was. They took 2 or 3 or 9 or so episodes and spliced them together. No new footage at all. But it was a theatrical release. About 20 minutes of the “engines” making the jujubees dance in the lobby, too.
It makes for a good example of how great the new T.V. is because it’s decent stock footage and most importantly, it’s cheap.

Get this: BG has been bought up by Fox and they’ll be making a 2 hour movie to pilot a new series for the 2002/3 season. This is from the Sci/Fi CHannel newswire.
I suspect you’re right about this. I remember MST3K running what looked like an extremely low budget movie that used space clips from BG. I think it was episode #820 “Space Mutiny”, but I’m not sure.
I rarely watch MST3K (I like it, but our schedules are incompatible) but the last time and one of the few times I saw it, that episode was on. Damn, that was a SERIOUSLY bad movie. I especially liked the love interest who looked older than her father.
Well, I don’t know about that here on Long Island, as all 3 big box Electronic retailers ads DO NOT have BattleStar Galactica (which, BTW, I enjoyed back in Junior HS days)
The ads are generic water scenes (Scuba divers and Wind-surfers), or from recent movies [The Wedding Planner, and that Mob Movie scene with the 2 cheezy-suited wiseguys in the back of the limo). No Cylons.
This is kinda related, but a local PC hardware shop that caters to the overclocker and general hardware nerd generally plays movies like Top Gun and Star Wars and the Star Trek movies on all their monitors to demonstrate them, and last time I went in they were playing BG. I was slightly more tempted to buy the entire store than usual and upon thinking about it, I’ve come to think that BG has subliminal messages inlaid to it “BUY THIS, YOU’LL GET MORE GIRLS” or somthing, heh.
