The Ugly Christmas Lights Website!

http://www.uglychristmaslights.com/index.html

Just go and look.

Nothing I can say would add anything to this.

Actually, one or two are kinda nice – I liked the one with the reflections in the lake. But this one, with the illuminated palm trees is a tad bizarre.

This star is peeing or something.

Another one – this one is a live action clip, so if you’re at work turn the sound down since the music is kinda loud:

What some people won’t do

That is VERY impressive!

Oh. Your. God.

I just don’t get it.

C’mon you guys, there’s no such thing as ugly christmas lights.

Only two were truely ugly, the rest were just too many lights in one place. I would push for a lights out ordinance after 10:00 pm if they were in my nieghborhood.

PS
Maybe a few of those Russian squirels sent in to chew on the wires.

I love the Dope.

I went there and looked through all the lights, then I went to the Links page, where I found:

Christmas in the Bronx

After gagging a bit, that page led me to the other pages on that interesting site.

Forgotten NY

After looking through Cobblestones, Lamps and several other wonderful pages, I clicked on:

You’d never believe you’re in NYC

And I clicked on the first link there, entitled

Total Trash (about the New York City Farm Colony)

As I looked at those sad pictures and scrolled down, I noticed this bit: “In 1945, Alice Austen, the as-yet-unknown photographic chronicler of Staten Island and New York City, arrived here to spend the remaining eight years of her life after her bankruptcy” and clicked on the link, which led me to:

Alice Austin, which I’ve been pouring over in fascination and awe.

No, the story doesn’t end up that I found my long-lost grandmother or anything, but in the space of an hour I’ve gone from never having heard of Alice Austin, to being obsessed with her, all thanks to a link about ugly Christmas Tree Lights.

I love the net.

I liked it too. Made me smile, and I’m usually quite a humbug about anything Christmas. Unlike Mama Tiger I liked the music. A classical tune (which one??) set to rock, and damn well synchronized with the lights.

The peace sign was the one “odd” spot imho though.

I agree there’s no such thing as ugly Christmas lights, but dozens and dozens of tacky plastic characters randomly dispersed on the lawn are less pretty. I liked the snow-covered plastic flamingos pulling the sleigh, though.

The Strip. Yikes! I would not want to see that guy’s electric bill.

This thread and particularly the sentiment quoted here remind me of this 1999 thread detailing Nonie and Oscar’s nativity scene. No pix, but a great read. I think this is considered a “classic” SDMB thread, so apologies if it’s already been linked to dozens of times this holiday season.

When I am appointed Queen of the World™, I will outlaw, worldwide, those damned huge nylon holiday balloons. I don’t like them. And there are families around here who think they are the height of holiday decorating, and have three, four or even five of them, stuffed in a teeny, tiny front yard. And different ones for each holiday. Many of them featuring Scooby Doo.

They make moving yeard balloons now. The local Eckerd has one that features Santa bobbing up and down in a chimney.

My neighborhood is very eclectic, with many different income levels… and taste. This is most evident at Christmas. The “historical” homes have a single candle light in each window and maybe a plain wreath with a red ribbon on the door. The tiny little cottages, have huge inflatables and lights of every color. One of my favorites is a dwelling that used to be somebody’s shed. Blue lights around the roof and “ELVIS LIVES” in red lights above the porch.

We can always tell if the single guy across the street has a girlfriend. If so, there’ll be lights trimming the roof, windows and door. If not, it looks like he wadded up a strand of lights and threw it onto the bushes in his front yard.

I’ve noticed something new this Christmas. Has anyone else seen giant “snow globes”, which contain a snowman or a santa and a lot of snowflakes being blown around by a fan?

Yeah, I think those are new. My boss has one because her five-year-old daughter saw it at Costco and simply couldn’t live without it. She says it’s about eight feet tall and obscures most of the front of their house, but young Julia is thrilled.

I’ll never forget my grandparents’ neighbors. On their roof, spelled out in colored lights:

NOLE

I was out with my neighbour a couple of weeks ago buying stuff to replace our mutual fence when he nearly ran the lumber cart he was pushing into a display. I looked up to the top of the shelves, and there was Santa in his snow globe. He was just boggled, while I cracked up! I liked it so much he offered to buy it for me, but I declined.

There are a few places around here that would qualify for that site in the OP. I’ll have to go cruising for lights…
