To be honest, that sounds* less* weird than some of the visions Brooker brings us!
I’m glad this thread is here, it’s a great show. It’s not for everyone, there are some shows I recommend to most of my friends, but some of the episodes of Black Mirror might be too dark and weird for some. But if anyone is interested in watching it, you should try it out.
I don’t know if White Bear was my favorite, but it’s definitely the one that’s stuck with me the most. It was upsetting.
I also really liked Fifteen Million Merits. It was an interesting take on the future dystopia world and the ending was so tragic. He escaped his little prison for a bigger one with a nice view. Might not even be a real view.
It was just added to American Netflix yesterday. The only place it had been shown previously in the US was on Direct TV. I don’t know if now that it’s on Netflix means that it will be on Hulu soon, or if it will only be on Netflix.
I can’t say Brooker is a genius, but it’s good enough.
Same home town as Ricky Gervaise, fwiw.
“Black Mirror” is truly an amazing show. I first watched it because I heard about the basic plot hook in the first episode. It sounded stupid but fun. I was surprised at how intelligent and engrossing it was.
Although “White Bear” is probably my favorite episode, I also very much enjoyed “Fifteen Million Merits”. Whatever it lacks in thermodynamic plausibility it more than makes up for in its social and psychological accuracy.
Oh dear OG.
I’m ten minutes into the first episode and I’m laughing but also very afraid of seeing several things that could happen.
Interesting what **Shakes **quotes that the cast changes for each episode. THAT was something I found unsettling just by itself. I think the first one I saw was with the girl who wakes up every morning (not giving anything away there) … and I wondered how they’d cast her for the next episode. They don’t.
Some of the episodes are really haunting.
Meh.
I hope it gets better than the first episode.
One of the many disturbing scenes in ‘white bear’ seems to have been filmed not far from my home. It’s the forest scene with the drills. That looks very much like a part of epping forest where I often take my kids as there’s a rope swing on one of the trees. Or should I say it’s where I used to take them until I watched this.
Yes, if it hasn’t been made clear yet, every episode is a standalone story that has nothing whatsoever to do with any other episode.
The Wiki quote in post #2 says it’s an anthology series. Personally, I like anthologies. My favorite is still the Showtime series “Masters of Horror.” It streamed on Netflix a long time ago. I think it’s only on disc right now.
I’m only familiar with it due to this podcast I like. The one they discussed was about a world run by ads and reality TV, though they did briefly touch on the first episode.
You may recognize the voices–they’re both rather popular educational YouTubers–although one is almost never the main guy in his videos.
I just watched the first episode because of this thread. Man, that’s messed up.
I just binge watched all six episodes available on Netflix. I really enjoyed them. I need more!
What came to mind as I watched the first episode:
I had to remind myself that this was filmed years ago. When someone said, “if it’s terrorists they’ll take her head off” reminded me of ISIS broadcasting their murders.
Plenty of that going on on camera and uploaded years before Black Mirror was filmed.
Can I just watch any of them in any order? I want to skip to the ones you all recommended. There is no real continuity, right?
I miss his Weekly Wipe shows as well. Brooker was one of the few people I’ve seen give Doug Stanhope airtime to do what he wants, a bold move to say the least.
Between yesterday and today, I watched all 6 episodes. Feel free to watch them in any order as they are each individual, self-contained stories with no overlap whatsoever.
By the way, I liked 5 of the 6 episodes. I was not in love with episode 6 at all.
I’m watching White Bear right now.
Watched the first two episodes…I am really liking this. I was surprised to see season one was made three years ago, almost four. It was as timely as ever.
