The Ultimate Fighter 2

Any Dopers going to be watching this tonight on Spike at 11:05?

I remember there being a couple of people who were following along last time.

This season will consist of heavyweights and welterweights and the coaches are UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes and UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin.

I’m looking forward to it, and watched a bunch of the lead-up programming in anticipation. Best moment from all of that was Joe Rogan’s describing Matt Hughes as a “brutally strong genteic freak.”

OK, so we’re about half way through the first episode, and one burning question presents itself. What the fuck are the metal-ring-on-black-cord necklaces about? Every contestant has one. Oddly, every contestant on VH1’s Strip Search, also set in Vegas, also had one. Is it a Vegas thing? A reality show thing? Some sort of testosterone poisoning antidote Medic Alert thing?

I was wondering about the necklaces too.

I was kind of disappointed with both Kenny and Eli. For Kenny, if you’re supposed to fight at 170, what the hell are you doing showing up at 191? If this is your dream and you actually made it to the show why would you show up 21 pounds above your fighting weight. And Eli, well if he decided that he couldn’t deal with the cameras and being filmed 24/7, maybe you should’ve thought of that before the show started.

It seems they’ll be adding one more heavyweight next week to replace Kerry and his torn ligament. With two guys quitting because they weren’t prepared it was tough to watch him get injured because he wanted to fight and to win.

Luke desperately needs to find some charisma.

Yah, I love typing out a multi-paragraph response to a thread only to have the fucking board time out. This is the only site I’ve seen anywhere on the internet that times out so constantly. It would be nice if the money we paid every year would stop this shit from happening…

Anyway, to try to briefly reconstruct what I took the time and trouble to type out once already:

Since I’m not in Kenny’s head or body, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that cutting another 4-5 pounds would be hazardous to his health. That said, I agree he was an idiot for going in 20 pounds over weight.

I might have sympathized with Eli based on the reality of living with the cameras being different than imagining it, except he threw out that line about how he wasn’t sure if he still wanted to be a fighter. Figure that out before you go on a show called Ultimate Fighter, dumbass.

The first ep was too referential to last season. Comparisons are inevitable but IMHO they should be minimized. Let the new guys stand or fall on their own.

I want the mouthy guy with the eyebrow piercing to get busted up.

Oh, and word on the show’s message board is that the necklaces are microphones. What with the guys running around half-naked (bless their hearts) there’s nothing to clip them to.

I’m just glad that we can see some actual UFC fights on Spike TV instead of damn PPV. I caught the 2 Matt Hughes/Frank Trigg fights and the Rich Franklin/Evan Tanner fight the other night, I’d never seen any of them before.

Didn’t catch the first season, but am excited to get to watch this one. I missed last night, though. Does anyone know if they will be reairing?

I also love the fact that they have been showing so many fights to promote this show and the Liddell-Horn pay per view.

Since I missed the first season, would anyone care to give me a rundown of how the show is run? For instance, do they vote guys out based on performance, or do you go home after you lose one match?

The site is Here It gives a rundown on how they do it and has a recap of last night’s episode.

I didn’t catch every episode last year, but there would be a team challenge and the winning team got to pick one of their fighters to fight anybody in the same weight class off the losing team IIRC. The loser of that fight went home.

Fox Sports Net is showing some UFC fights periodically too. Usually on Sunday nights after Poker Superstars and then repeated through the week.

I loved the pre-fight interviews with Hughes and Trigg for the second fight:

Trigg: I gave him my back three times and he didn’t take me down until the third time.
Hughes: <shaking head> Frank…

FYI, Frank Trigg was one of the boytoys trying to hook up with Jerry Hall on VH1’s Kept. One of the other potential boytoys was a former Power Ranger.
