The McGarrigle Christmas Hour has a bunch of less played Christmas music, but my favorite may be the Martha Wainright/Lily Lanken cover of the Chieftains’ “Rebel Jesus”.
Lute forgot to mention “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses
I’ve also just added “Turkey Lurkey Time” from Promises, Promises to my holiday play list
Maybe Lute didn’t mention it because RealityChuck already did back in post #3.
I’ll add “Merry Christmas From The Family” by Robert Earl Keen. Cracks me up every time I hear it.
“Christmas at Ground Zero” by Weird Al Yankovic
“Little Drummer Boy” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
You cannot go wrong with the Carols for a Cure series.
I would recommend The Alligator Records Christmas album, chock full of blues-tinged Christmas songs. (My personal favorite - “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’”.)
Also Brave Combo’s “Must Be Santa”.
The cleverly titled Christmas by The Posies is a favorite of mine.
My brother-in-law played for me a little holiday song called
“Christmas on Acid” by The Vestibules.
I believe they have a website where you can see a video of this.
Truly unique.
My favorite Christmas collection ever:
What no mention of Mistletoe and Wine by Cliff Richard.
For shame.
Insert ? where required :smack:
Not quite in the theme of seasonal secular Christmas music that’s the main theme of this thread, but how about some actual carols that seem to get overlooked amid the God-resting merry gentlemen and the coming-upon midnights clear and so on?:
Jean de Brebeuf’s Huron Carol, a retelling of the nativity in terms familiar to the Huron Indians by a French missionary at Sault Ste. Marie.
W Zlobie Lezy (AKA Infant Holy, Infant Lowly), an old Polish carol
Christina Rossetti’s beautiful poems In the bleak midwinter and Love came down at Christmas
Richard Wilbur’s A stable lamp is lighted (there are several other nice items at the Addison Road link too)
Michael Praetorius’s Lo, how a rose e’er blooming
Yep, though Chuck spelled it wrong.
I have 1, 2, 3, 4 (the live one from Washington, DC), 5, and Acoustic.
My favorites:
The Night Santa Went Crazy (extra gory version) by “Weird” Al
*Merry Fucking Christmas * by Denis Leary
I was just about to post this exact same thing (I was scanning for your name to see if you already mentioned it!) I have the new Volume 8 and it’s great. My favorites on that album are “The Birthday of a King” by Norm Lewis & “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” sung by Howard McGillin. Plus the money raised by the sale of the CD goes to a great cause.
Thanks, Eyebrows. I plug these CDS as much as possible this time of year. They are simply some of the best holiday music you will ever hear, and it is for a great cause.
I hope you have volumes 1 - 7 too. You haven’t heard “Silent Night” until you’ve heard it as a tap dance.
I like Boney M.
That Dalek thing upthread…<shudders>
this is a great thread-I need to check some of this music out.
Most of my suggestions should be easy to find at the iTunes Music Store.
Not entirely appropriate, but after (IIRC) reading the suggestion on the SDMB, I like substituting Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World” for the expected carol.
