The Constitution says that members of the Electoral College have to meet in their state capital to cast their votes. Will the upcoming vote have to be in person, or will they be handling in remotely? Probably state by state.
I don’t see how it could be done remotely. They have to sign actual pieces of paper that are physically sent to Congress.
If papers can be physically sent to Congress (by, presumably, the Governor, Secretary of State or other relevant official of each state) then it seems at least conceptually possible that they can signed by each elector in isolation and sent physically to the Governor, etc.
The electoral college never actually meets as a single body, and yet it functions. If it can do that without meeting as a single body, then it can do that without meeting as 50 sub-bodies. It’s not as though it needs to make any substantive decisions or engage in any substnative deliberations of the kind that might benefit from face-to-face meeting.
It’s done! I just saw on WaPo – Hawaii, the last state to report its electoral votes, has done so. Biden has his full 306 votes now.
There were no faithless electors.
I’m actually pretty surprised by that.
Well, I was wrong, wasn’t I? Based on the video, it looks like Nevada made each certificate (at least) six pages long so each elector could have their own part to sign remotely.
