The use of favorite songs in advertising

I found this website while reading this thread, (it’s a list of recent advertising using popular music, and is good for a quick look).

I vaguely remember hearing a rumor that Preparation H wanted to use “Ring of Fire” in a commercial. Is this true, or a joke?

Heh, this thread reminds me- the first time I ever heard the Cyndi Lauper song True Colors I thought, “Well, there’s a Kodak ad.”

And it was, later. Hee. I’m surprised more of her stuff isn’t used for commercials. I think the only other song of hers I’ve heard used is (of course), “Girls just wanna have fun.”

I agree with the poster upthread, they should use more 80s music for commercials. But not the Cure, what are they thinking?! That was angsty, outcast-kids anthems! I also thought that felt wrong, but I was glad it wasn’t my favorite from that album. (That would be Facination Street.) A small and pitiful blessing.

In the US, unfortunately, they don’t sell vibrators on TV, otherwise they could have put “She Bop” to work.

The song that amuses me is Seger’s “Like A Rock” with whatever pickup truck it advertises. The point of the song was that being “like a rock” was transitory - illusory, even. And at least for me, that becomes the subtext of the commercials.
