The Wachowski's "Jupiter Ascending" delayed until 2015

So Wachowski doesn’t think it’s derivative enough? It’s too original? Somehow I doubt that.

I’ll probably wait for the DVD, unless word of mouth says it’s worth it in the theater.

I’m intrigued. I loved Cloud Atlas, despite the mediocre reviews (it might help that I read and loved the book beforehand). I liked the Matrix and disliked the sequels. The few good reviews seem to agree that it’s a mess, but they say it’s a very enjoyable mess. That might be enough for me.

I don’t care if it sucks, it looks like it will be a fun mess even if it is a mess, and I want to support non-franchise fantasy/sf work.

As for the “indie creativity vs franchise familiarity” - that sounds awfully like they’re just trying to put a positive spin on being shuffled off to the movie dumping ground.

I think if you’re in the mood for dialog like this…

Caine Wise: “Your Majesty, I have more in common with a dog than I have with you.”
Jupiter: “I love dogs. I’ve always loved dogs.”

…you’ll like it just fine. You don’t have to see an Oscar contender every time out.

I’ll wait for DVD on this one, but I was planning to anyway. I’m still surprised it got moved so much at the last minute.

The AV Club review is surprisingly, if not unreservedly, positive.

I want to like it. I’ll probably go see a Matinee.

Can someone just tell us if Sean Bean dies in the movie? Spoilerbox it if you like.

At this point I feel either this movie is misunderstood and is actually some kind of send up or satire of space operas, or is so far out there it might be good.

Or it is shockingly bad in the vein of fan fiction written by high schoolers.

Something is gotta give.

A friend posted on Facebook:

Kinda makes me think that if I see it I should see it with an audience instead of home alone on my T.V.

I do, however, have a few decent second-run discount theaters near me. So, if I wait, I can still see it with an audience but get away with paying only $3.00.

And you can drink beer and eat pizza. It’s the civilized way.

For what it’s worth, I give you the NY Post’s review, which helpfully spells out that it’s “so bad it’s almost good” – indeed, that it’s an “instant candidate for the so-bad-it’s-sort-of-great hall of fame” – because it’s “borderline incomprehensible, but that hardly matters in a movie a movie so jaw-droppingly awful that you can’t wait to see what happens next”.

I loved the worldbuilding and the design look. They were awesome.

I actually preferred the film over the excellent book. Tywker and the Wachowskis made the most the constant visuals to carry the theme along and allow quick era switches. I also prefered the relatively less cynical simplification of the Neo-Seoul arc.

Here’s an article from Cloud atlas’ author on the differences between screen and page.

Anyway, since Cloud Atlas also received terrible reviews and yet is probably my favourite film, I will definately go and see Jupiter Ascending. Even if it ends up being a meaningless mess, I’d still appreciate the world building and spectacle. (For example, I actually found myself entertained by Starwars Episode I and III,)

Heh. Mila’s character’s name is Jupiter Jones.

No way. For pity’s sake, now I’m going to have to see that.

From what I can distill from online reviews; it’s star wars for girls. Despite not being one, I’ll still go see it. Big fan of SFX.

Had plans to see it yesterday, but family happened.

Will be seeing it tonight and will take notes and report back. Got to remember how to spoilerbox again.
