The Wal-Mart I work at sucks.

I’m a part-time cart pusher at Wal-mar Supercenter. I work 20 hours a week for $8 an hour. That’s just to give you some background.

In every conceivable way, my Wal-Mart is an utter abomination. Now I realize that’s true of pretty much every Wal-Mart, but allow me to rant a little.

First of all, for the past 5 weeks, I’ve been the only cart pusher present on Saturday night. Now, some of you may not realize just how huge and busy a Super Wal-Mart is, but at the one I work at, we probably have > 400 people coming every hour on Saturday Nights. Add that to the fact that there is around 2000 carts for this store and you can see what the problem is. There is just no way for me to keep up with it.

The reason I’m the only one there is because the guy who should be there working with me has extracurricular stuff at his school. He told these managers WEEKS in advance that he wouldn’t be available to work on Saturday nights, but the managers neglected to schedule a replacement for him. They do this week after week, despite both us telling them repeatedly that they need to schedule someone else. So because of their ineptness, it’s just me by myself on Saturday nights.

Like I said, I can’t keep up with it; it’s just too much for one person to handle. In addition to being the only one there, when I come in there’s usually no carts in either cart bay in the store. This is because the guys who work saturday mornings usually leave 2-3 hours before I come in. So for that time, there are NO cart pushers at all for the store. So what happens is that there’s hundreds of carts in the parking lot, but almost no carts inside, available for the customers. This understandbly irritates them.

As a cart pusher, my other job is to take out heavy merchandise to customer’s cars and load it up for them (when they can’t do it themselves). However, since again, I’m the only one there, they may have to wait long periods of time if I’m already helping other customers with their stuff. You may say, “Why can’t another employee help these customers out if you’re busy?”

To that I say, “hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.” The deal is, nobody else WILL come out to do that because no one cares. At all.

We have a cart pushing machine at the store I work at. It’s great because it can push around 45 carts at a time. Whereas I can only push in about 12 at a time. I could push in mroe than that, actually, but more than 12 carts is impossible to control. This cart machine then, makes me about 4 times as efficient. You would think that it would be in the management’s interest to keep that machine running, but every time it breaks, it takes them 4-6 WEEKS to fix it. They are well aware that it’s broken, they simply don’t care enough to do anything. And no, it isn’t me who’s been breaking the machine. In every case it’s been the overnight stockers. They keep overloading the machine and burning out its motor.

Let’s talk about the store’s appearence. In general, the word I would use is “filthy”. There is merchandise spread out all over the floor, everywhere. We simply don’t have enough people to pick things up after customers. Another problem is the fact that the swere line running out of the store is hopelessly backed up. This means that outside the store, there is a horrible smell that one can’t escape. It’s been there for the entire five months I’ve been working there. Again, management knows but doesn’t care.

Because we are perpetually short-handed, customers have to wait ~ 20-30 minutes to checkout. And since our cashiers have to page a CSM to do just about anything, they make our customers wait even longer until the CSM can get there and do whatever. Usually, it takes about 4 pages to get a CSM to a checkstand. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating for the customers.

Another, more minor deal, but it illustrates how our store is run: We have two entrances and exits in the store, each on one side of the store. On one of these sides, the sensor for the door broke, meaning that it wouldn’t open at all. It broke before Christmas. It was just last week that someone finally repaired it. So from Dec 16-February 20, one of the entrances didn’t even open!

To sum up, because we are short-handed and run by a completely inept management, everything about the store is done horribly wrong. And yes I am qutting soon. In fact, March 7 is my last day at this store.

Apparently working at Wal-Mart has completely scramble my brains. Could a mod please move this to the BBQ Pit?

Rightio.

You’ve written to The Boss, haven’t you?

What the hell is Springsteen supposed to do about it?

Hey, every time I’ve shopped at Wal-Mart (and assorted other Marts), my experience has been pretty much as you described. The stores are ugly, crowded, and just annoying to be in.

The only reason Wal-Mart is such a draw is that the prices are low, and John Q. will generally accept crappy service to save a few bucks. Call it a peculiar Americanism, but there you go.

Also, re: shopping carts, this is a beef of mine. Why does NOBODY ever return their damn carts to the Kart Korral? Every time I go to a cart-based establishment, there are carts all over the place, left blocking parking spots, etc. Return your damn carts, for fucks sake! Just because the stores have a guy who returns stray carts doesn’t mean you should leave your cart lying around, give the guy (and those who actually want to park in parking spots) a break, dammit!

Who?

OK, I was referring to the President and CEO of Walmart.

looking for shackles on Ray Walker’s ankles

None found…

If you are unhappy working there, find a job somewhere else and turn in your notice.

You have valid complaints, but your local management is not up to the task. You’ll beat your head into the wall trying to change things. There’s too many good jobs to work at one that sucks.

At least you’re getting out soon, Ray Walker. Your complaints are the same reasons I don’t go to Wal Mart.

People that tell others to find a new job really annoy me sometimes 'cause the person might have valid reasons for sticking with a job they do not enjoy.

In Ray’s case, it could very well be that, as a part-time employee, he needs a second job to pay bills that his first job doesn’t pay enough to cover or it could be that he’s a student and works at Wal Mart because, for all its bad PR, is a halfway decent company to work for (I worked for one for two years and pushed carts occasionally when help was needed so I know what I’m talking about) with really flexible schedules that allow you to work whenever you can and still keep a job.

Then, of course, there’s always the possibility that he’s stuck there because there’s nothing else. As someone who’s been unemployed and looking desperately for work for six months now, I know how tough it is to find a job… he might not want to be in my (and millions of others’) shoes and would prefer to keep his meager earnings instead of having … well, none.

Any combination of those three would be a good enough reason to stick with the job. Not everyone can just change careers every time they feel like their job sucks.

It seems he *IS * finding a job somewhere else…

I thought he was clear on that.

…aaand I just saw that he’s quitting soon (must proofread better) so that takes a bit of wind out of my sails. My argument still stands for all the other instances of people telling others to quit when they don’t have all the information available.

Oh sure, put your carts away and you’re giving the cart pushers a break. Why the fuck don’t I stick a broom up my ass and sweep the store while I’m at it? I don’t work for the store. If everyone put the carts away, Ray Walker’s, and his replacement’s job is gone.

It’s the same with checking your own groceries and doing your own bagging. Where are they going to draw the line? Do I have to put on an apron and cut my own meat so Walmart can fire the butcher?

Don’t get me started on getting my own boarding pass at the airport and using the ATM instead of a teller. If the customers would quit doing the jobs that should be done by the vendors of goods and “services” the unemployment figures would be a lot lower.

Assuming we’re not being wooshed:

Oh puh-lease. You know, guys like you really piss me off.

“Oh, why should I do something that would take me a whole 5 seconds to do, when someone else can come do it for me?”

People with this attitude piss me off! The world is not full of servants running around to look after you, Bill. Putting your shopping trolley in the corrall won’t kill you! And I’ve got news for you, it makes everyone’s shopping experience that much better.

It’s just laziness, Bill, and believe it or not, your laziness irritates every other shopper who has to get out of their car, move trolleys about to park, and push your trolley out of the way. Even worse, your laziness contributes to damage done to peoples’ cars. The fact that a trolley collector exists does not give you a right to just leave your trolley wherever it ends up.

Incidentally, do you throw your trash out directly onto the footpath? You know, the garbage collectors come round every week! I mean, why should you put it in a bin? The garbos will take care of it! Make those bastards earn their money!! Hey, with the added workload, maybe they’ll need to hire more garbos just to pick up your trash! There! You’re contributing to society by creating more employment opportunities! I’m surprised your Prez didn’t think of it sooner. You know, maybe you should write to congress with your amazing idea for reducing unemployment figures. I’m sure they’d be delighted to receive that letter.

I have an idea! Why don’t you hire some servants! You can have one following you around the house, cleaning up all your messes. You can hire one specially to wipe your arse after you take a dump. Not surprisingly, they can also double as a mouth-wiper, to clean up after you’ve finished talking.
Max.

Is it a Canadian thing where carts are locked up until you put a quarter (sometimes a dollar) in? It seems to solve the problem with runaway carts.

Give me a break. No one’s asking you to take the cart all the way back to the store – just to roll it to one of the dozens of conveniently placed corrals littering the parking lot. I’m sure there’s one no more than 50 feet from wherever you may choose to park. This does not negate the employee’s work, as the carts still need to be moved from the corrals to the store proper.

Putting away your cart does make things better for you and all the other customers, though. For one, stray carts block parking spaces, as well as having a tendency to get caught by the wind and rammed into cars on the lot. Also, this minimum amount of effort on your part will result in more efficient work for the employee, and will result in there always being carts available for you in the store when you decide to go shopping.

You know, I’m reminded of the time, years ago when I used to work retail, that I was putting out stock in the toy department. I heard a loud crash one aisle over, followed by a customer saying to their child, “Don’t pick that up, that’s what the people who work here get paid to do.” Based on your post, that sounds just like something you’d say, and that kind of attitude really pisses me off.

Possibly, but only at the cost of raising prices so that they can cover the wages of these new employees. So, yeah, there’d be more jobs, but their pay would be coming from your pocket.

Those automatic cart pushing machines are cool. There are two at the local Super Wal-Mart, and those babies are efficient. Are they remote controlled or do they run by sensor or what? I saw a guy with a string of around 50, and he didn’t even touch the machine: it just went straight then abruptly turned the carts into the inside coral. FASCINATING…

Joe Random Ummm, the “cart corrals” are outside the store, the OP would still have a job, pushing carts INTO the store for incoming customers to grab and use, they just asked that the carts not be left blocking parking spaces etc. An entirely reasonable request, and one which I myself do.

Ray Walker Report this problem to the health department ASAP, that’s a health risk for everyone who goes near/lives near the store.

I thought that was pretty much what I said:

blush Joe Random My sincerest apologies, I did not mean you, I typed the wrong name. I meant to address those comments in my previous post not to you, but to Bill Door. I am sorry, I will be more careful in the future when addressing comments to previous posters in a thread.
