fire crackers and cigarettes or punks work well as timed distractions as well.
And there’s always the zombie guts camouflage they forget about. The only reason it failed in Atlanta was because of the rain. It’s gross but beats getting eaten.
I did a quick scan and never saw any of that.
What I did see was someone ask for a spoiler of what is in the barn in the comics and multiple people responded.
Is it not okay to answer when someone asks, either?
Can someone officially let us know what is acceptable in this thread from here on out?
Was just trying to join in the chit-chat about the show, didn’t know it would cause such a stir.
I’d assume the same is true for the other offending “comic” mentioners…
Even if someone asks and you put it in a spoiler tab?
Yeah, we really need an official SDMB person or the OP to chime in here. No idea what can and can’t be done, at this point.
I fault salinqmind for not putting the question in a spoiler box since the very question gives away plot point. salinqmind should have realized this, having apparently read some of the earlier spoiler boxes hinting about it.
But regardless, all the spoiler boxes throughout the thread must be an annoyance to anyone who hasn’t read the books. One absent-minded click, and…
Stifle yourselves, please.
“Stifle yourselves, please” is like “with all due respect, sod off”.
I’ll just refrain from commenting.
/tiphat
Well the reason that they don’t use the zombie guts camouflage is simple: They already tried it. In movies and TV you can only use each trick one time, otherwise the audience would get bored (supposedly). The same thing with the noisemakers to distract the zombies.
In real life people would try various tricks, and would soon have a fairly regular set of tactics for dealing with such situations: Cover yourself with guts, set a noisemaker a fair distance away, and move in and grab what you need. Sure it wouldn’t work every time, but it would work more often than making up a new plan every time and winging it when thing invariably go wrong.
In a TV series, the characters have only limited learning and reasoning ability to create dramatic tension, and be able to shoot Otis. Besides, as has been pointed out, these people are dumb. They would rather give dramatic speeches and scream hysterically than plan ahead.
they’re on a farm - since when is aksing what happens when they find the barn such an offending question -
If they were in atlanta, and we found out they were going to be at a farm - sure - if they were in a house, and someone asked about the zombie mouse - sure.
But being on a farm, asking about a barn? People are too sensitive.
Sodding off now.
I understand fireworks, but how do you use cigarettes and punks as a distraction? Flip them and hope they follow them like the T-rex in Jurassic Park?
I just wanted to give this phrase the recognition it deserves.
In my defense, I may have asked my question (from information contained in spoilers for this episode, #3), but there were two very clear references to this question in previous SDMB postings - for “Bloodletting”, episode #2. Those references were not spoilered, and those posters didn’t get yelled at.
I’m sorry, that was in next week’s sneak peek, but he does say what I remembered.
Now you might say it’s not a spoiler because it doesn’t reveal anything, but it does. It reveals that something is going to go wrong with this group of people, that they’re going to make a discovery. And there aren’t many things he could be talking about. They’re not going to find a fully functioning ice cream truck or a dildo emporium. As soon as he said that, I knew they were either capturing humans possibly to eat or enslave, or they were doing some sort of zombie experiment shit in there.
Even if I couldn’t figure out the implications or I’m wrong, it’s still annoying to have someone basically tapping you on the shoulder and say “wait till they get to the barn! that’s gonna shock you!”
Really? You think people just happened to innocently asked about the barn for no reason, like if they asked about the cellar or the third bedroom or behind that batch of trees in the back yard? And they just happened to ask about the place that’s going to get a major reveal soon? Just totally a coincidence?
I created a thread for comic book readers to discuss the comic in general and specifically how it relates to the show. We did a two-thread solution to game of thrones and it worked way better than having the entire thread dotted with spoiler boxes, and then having a debate about someone who left something out of a spoiler box, etc.
Can we please just use the dual-thread model? Because I know nothing turns everyone into cafe society into childish dicks like fights about spoilers. I could link to some posts if you’d like where everyone is basically just “Fuck you, I’ll spoil what I want, I’ll decide what you should need to know, and you’re just a little fucking crybaby for being concerned about it” and it just gets uglier.
A two thread solution is best for everyone - you can discuss the comic books freely and the majority of people who are just watching the TV show alone don’t have to wade through a spoiler minefield.
Light the cigarette, jab the fuse of the firework into the cigarette and the firework will set itself off when the cigarette burns down to the fuse.
For those not in the know, a punk is basically an unscented incense stick used to light fireworks so you don’t have to dick around with lighters or matches all night. You could tape a firework fuse to a punk and effectively have a twenty minute (or so) fuse.
Of course, I’m not sure it’s going to do any good because it seems none of the characters think more then 12 seconds ahead. I really don’t think they could realistically plan for zombies to be in a specific spot in 5 or 10 minutes for this to be useful.
Well, that, and the fact that when you are thrown into a zombie apocalypse, you probably won’t just happen to have a bunch of fireworks at hand.
Don’t really care why it was asked or what was in the book - knowing theres a barn or “bad things are in the barn” or “bad things might happen on the way to grandma’s house” doesn’t spoil things for me - I wouldnt even care if someone came out and said they run into micheal meyers next episode - this show is about “bad things happening” and every episode will have some form of “bad things happening to them” - knowing that in the book the barn meant that Shane and Rick get caught having wild monkey sex by lori who refuses to join in saying "y’all never did it that way to me’ would not lessen my enjoyment of the show -
People are way to sensitive about spoilers - I don’t have a clue what will happen next - but I guaruntee there something down the road… enjoy the ride, if you don’t want spoilers, dont read the boxes, if you don’t want to know anything possible in advance - wait to read the threads till the shows over.
uh oh - I said “road” - better hope something ain’t on the road - doh, I said it again.
(to the extent that it matters - I like the “it diverges from the comics here” parts of these threads - I like it when they say I wonder if - which, so far, is all the frack I have heard - it ain’t a plot point YET)
Great, you don’t care about being spoiled. Therefore you think no one else should care about being spoiled and you’re going to force it on them because you know what’s best for them.
Are you suggesting we not read and participate in the threads until the entire series is over several years down the road? This is a more optimal solution to you than just having people keep the discussions seperate?
That didn’t take long.
I guess I read it wrong. The person obviously meant fireworks lit with a cigarette or punk, but when I read it it really looked like “things that can be used as a distraction: 1: fireworks 2: cigarettes 3: punks.” I thought they must really have faith in zombies being mesmerized by the tiniest fire if they think a punk will distract them.
So far, no actual spoilers have been posted - asking about the “barn” in as nebulous a way is not a spolier - if anything its a teaser - since there is no indication yet whats in the barn, what happens at the barn, even if there is a barn.
this is a thread about a tv show that has a comic book tie in - or more correctly, about a show based on a set of already published graphic novels - it is not a thread about the graphic novels - but there will be open discussion about where things are ‘different’ between the two - they go hand in hand. So far, folks that have posted things about the divergence or what might happen next did so in spoiler boxes - they are quite easy to avoid.
What I am saying is if you are so sensitive to being spoiled the only_way to not be spoiled is to avoid all discussion and or thought about the show - because anything you read anywhere might contain a spoiler.
And so far - there HAVE BEEN NO ACTUAL SPOILERS POSTED.
