that would be one heck of a zombie!
How would they duplicate a steel plow? I mean, using what materials?
Steel and wood?
Well, yes, steel and wood would make a fine plow, yes, I agree.
They have wood. I admit I don’t know much if anything about it, but do they have the materials and wherewithal to make steel? Doesn’t that require iron ore, special materials and equipment? One thing to carve out handles for a plow, another thing to make the plow itself.
Start up a foundry? I suppose it’s possible.
I haven’t watched the show in quite some time. I understand Carl is dead, not so? How old is his sister Judith supposed to be? I hated it when kids were killed, silly of me but that’s how I am.
There’s a blacksmith at Hilltop, as I recall it. I’m pretty sure we saw one there last season. There are IRL people who smith as a hobby, it’s not too unlikely that someone with smithing skills would turn up.
…turns out, on researching, that Kenny’s dad - the guy who attacked Maggie - IS the blacksmith. Which may be part of why he didn’t end up hanging next to Gregory.
How hard is it to take the virtually unlimited amount of metal that is laying everywhere and bash it into some sort of plow shape?
Not that difficult. They’re going to have steel available for years, if not decades. They really didn’t need to grab a plow from the museum- a book would’ve done just fine for learning how to make one. However, it’s very possible that they also needed one right away.
Thinking about it, I’m kinda surprised they didn’t find a wagon and plow somewhat closer. I live in a pretty urban neighborhood, and there’s a guy just down the street from me with a collection of wagons and plows in his yard.
Maybe there were closer plows and wagons, but getting them didn’t require walking over a glass floor above zombies, so that plan was deemed to easy
AIUI, the Georgia State Capitol Building was standing in for a Washington museum.
How many Amish farmers are there in the south? I’m sure there is more plows unused by the plain zombies than there are in museums.
If a sufficient amount of recyclable steel wasn’t available, iron, or even bronze, would do. Melt the metal, pour the molten metal into a easily workable form, let a farrier, or a blacksmith, heat and beat the plate/chunk of metal into a horseshoe, plow, wheel rims for wagons, etc.
Plus - Eugene - besides telling the truth, what can’t that guy do?
They made plows for 100s of years before modern steel mills. It’s possible they just wanted a pattern or example. Anywhoo, it was a unique supply run. How many years can they keep finding old sources of canned food. They have to start producing instead of looking for stuff. And sure Eugene and others have abilities that are going to be crucial.
I still say they need to use the zombies as a resource. They can be rendered, and Eugene can make biodiesel.
OK. I see where ancient civilizations were able to make steel (and knowledge of that was lost, of course, in the Dark Ages). I’m sure someone will think of something, didn’t that woman who showed up last season hand them a book of ‘how to do stuff’? The thing is, people like Ken the blacksmith are killed off, they’re all hungry as hell, they’ve explored all around for miles and miles, they still have to fight off walkers. They better get those plows made and start planting seeds for more food right away.
In the opening there was some mention of Hilltop getting a lot of metal to melt down from the Kingdom so they are well on their way to getting a smithing operation up and running.
If I’m understanding this right, the saviors can’t grow food because they live in a factory, which means they need Hilltop to provide food.
That’s a reasonable source of conflict, since we all know there can’t possibly be any place else the saviors could settle. Nope, nowhere in all of Virginia they could find arable land. They must stay at the factory.
Yep, that checks out.
I enjoyed this. I have said for years they needed to pivot from showing a dying civilization to growing a new one and they are finally doing it. Raiding a museum for old style tech was clever and made for nice set pieces.
Also I know many fans will hate it but I find problems that can’t be solved by shooting at each other interesting. Curious to see what happens.
But it’s their HOME! They all have sentimental reasons for not leaving, like the time Neegan read them all The Night Before Christmas around the roaring furnace.
