I see that the word “accidents” is screwing up the message in that post, so here’s a revised version…
Drunk driving was causing too many deaths so laws were enacted to reduce their numbers, with successful results. Far fewer deaths were caused by running stop signs, so nothing extra needed to be done about it.
Now substitute “gun” for “drunk driving” and “knives” for “running stop signs” and that’s what should normally happen. Except it doesn’t with guns.
It’s worth noting that in creating laws against drunk driving, no one “blamed” alcohol. However, it’s very possible that some alcoholics accused lawmakers of blaming it. Addicts can be irrational that way.
If you want to see a decline in murders, you’re still going to have to deal with the murderers.
Alcohol was blamed for many of the problems of society. Instead of treating the person drinking the alcohol, the anti-alcohol zealots went so far as to pass a Constitutional amendment to prevent the sales of alcohol. That turned out well. :smack:
Murderers are already dealt with. Some are even put to death every year, and every year more keep taking their place. Dealing with them has no effect on future murderers. On the other hand, maintaining the status quo will have a monumental effect on the thousands of people they’re going to kill this year and every year.
Blaming murderers after the fact is useless. So is blaming guns;), honestly and truly and sincerely. What I blame is the current system that enables so many people to murder. Most of them too easily with guns.
You’ll get no argument from me on that, but I didn’t say anything about banning guns.
