The Pipers are all huddled inside this evening, after a major blizzard nearly shut down the province, with windchills currently at -35, forecasted for -50 tomorrow.
So, what’s a good hot toddy recipe that you like and would recommend to warm our Saskatchewanian bones?
1 shot Myer’s Rum. I suppose you can use something else, but I like Myer’s the best
~2 T. brown sugar
~1 T. butter
hot water
nutmeg
cinnamon stick
pinch of salt
Put the brown sugar, rum, and butter in a smallish mug. Squoosh it around some to make a paste. Add hot water - not too much, you don’t want it watery. Add a pinch of salt and stir. Grate nutmeg over the top and stick the cinnamon stick in it.
Tom and Jerry
These are a pain to make, but soooo delicious.
For two servings:
One egg, separated
1 shot rum
1 shot brandy
2 T. sugar
1.5 cups milk
nutmeg
Warm the milk in the microwave - be careful, it’ll boil over fast.
Put the egg white and 1 T. of the sugar in mixer. Mix until it forms stiff peaks.
Whisk together the egg yolk and remaining 1 T. sugar. Whisk until the yolk lightens and gets a little thick. Add in the rum and brandy and whisk. Fold in the beaten egg whites, careful not to let it all go flat.
Add half this batter to two mugs. Fill with the warm milk. Sprinkle nutmeg over the top. Yum Yum Yum, this is what eggnog wants to be.
Back when I used to drink, a hot toddy was simplicity itself. Not only was it good drinking, it’s wonderful when you have a head cold.
Peel off a generous but thin peel of lemon zest. Pinch and rub the zest around the lip of a mug, and then put the zest in the bottom of the mug with a teaspoon of sugar - raw, if you have raw sugar. Muddle it together with a muddler if you have one, or the end of a wooden spoon. This is to break open the lemon oil capsules in the zest and heighten the fragrance. Add a jigger of your choice of liquor. I liked rum the best. Stir in boiling water to your taste. The lemon oil fragrance will immediately release in the steam and it will smell heavenly (and unclog your sinuses if you have a headcold). Enjoy.
Well a toddy for me was a cup of weak tea, with a half shot of whiskey, two teaspoonfuls of honey and a wedge of lemon. Not recommended for children under six.
3-4 tablespoons of honey and 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Simmer in a shallow pan on low heat until it gets bubbly. Transfer to a mug and add enough bourbon to suit you.
Thanks for the replies, all. Got distracted by something else last night and didn’t have a chance to put any into effect, but perhaps tonight.
Weather remains frightful - outside temperature is currently -32 C, and wind chill is expected to take it to -50. Mrs. Piper and I had planned a road trip today, but we’re trying to put it off for a day until weather improves.
Now, why did I expect to see a post from silenus in this thread? and why do you need a hot toddy in southern California? aren’t you supposed to be hot-tubbing or something?
When I was in college, lo these 25 years ago, we used to make toddies in a “hot pot” (that, to you microwave generation, was a device that you plugged in to heat water. Period. It was what you cooked ramen in.). Recipe as follows:
Enough water to fill mug of your choice
2 cinnamon sticks
3 whole cloves
Boil until liquid is straw-colored and smells heavenly
While water boils, add 1 shot of rum and sugar to taste (no less than 1 T) to mug
Pour water into mug. Stir well. Drink.
If you have a cold, go to bed immediately and wake up feeling much better.
