"The White Queen" - anyone watching it?

Is it worth watching or taping? The NYTimes critic wasn’t wild about the series.

I want to watch enough of the right movies and series that I can get the kings and queens of England sorted out in my head before I die. And I’m already pretty old, so I’m running out of time. .

I have absolutely no idea if it will help with that, or just confuse you more. I don’t know if it’s historically accurate or not. But as entertainment of the strong-women-characters-in-corsets genre, I’m enjoying it. I’ve only seen the first two episodes though, so maybe it goes downhill.

Bitch needs to get some dragons or something.

Just watched the first episode. It looks like it first aired on BBC One and season one concluded on Aug. 11th with no second series planned. However it wouldn’t surprise me if Starz picked it up if it has a good run. DaVinci’s demons did pretty well didn’t it? And after Spartacus, don’t they need another period drama?

Anyway, I tend to be a sucker for period pieces since they help me to fill in the black holes of my knowledge of European history.

The problem with that is that after the events in The White Queen, the series pretty much would just be The Tudors. Although it would have to start with Henry VII, so there’d be a lot less sex and, indeed, a whole lot less of anything that might make compelling viewing.

Anyway, I’ve enjoyed the series. It’s heavily fictionalised obviously, but the main points of history are just about right. Haven’t seen the final episode yet, but I’m hoping Richard wins.

OB

SPOILER!!!

 l

Stopped after 3 episodes. Why does Elizabeth Woodville i) seem to have a modern attitude to the whole King’s right and ii) have a Swedish accent.

I didn’t want to see it in episodic form but, now it’s finished on BBC, I’m trying … I’m struggling though; 1 3/4 hours in and it’s looking a bit too much like a bog standard, one-dimensional costume drama - with the added negative of seemingly being yet another drama emphasising how wonderful and heroic women are and how rubbish men are: Barely finished Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake, I really don’t need to be slapped around the head with this [again!] so soon.

So, can’t say I recommend it, might be easier if you like an uncomplicated costume drama.

Maybe check out Top of the Lake first

I liked the first episode but the second was so boring I nearly stopped watching. I don’t know if I will tune in for the third.

Finally saw the first episode. It’s as crappy and silly as Da Vinci’s Demons, and I managed to slog through that steaming pile to the end of the first season so I expect to be able to go the distance with The White Queen’s Boobies.

It’s unfortunate that the other Starz period dramas suck so hard compared to Spartacus, which itself wasn’t all that great but at least was fairly decent.

It’s ok. Massively hyped here and apparently ferociously expensive. I managed to stick with it till the end, but it did dip drastically in the middle. Very uneven pacing and as it’s 10 episodes based on 3 full books, skipped a lot of interesting stuff. That’s not to say it wasn’t good, it just wasn’t great. For all the haminess and inaccuracies of The Tudors, it’s much more fun.

And Rebecca wotsit who plays Elizabeth Woodville doesn’t sound in the least bit Swedish to me, she sounds English.
