The Wii Fit Thread

How does that work, really? You just jog in place? That doesn’t seem to be terribly effective to me, but hey.

Well, see, step aerobics works for some people, and this is no different. The feedback Wii Fit gives you is more than I’ve ever seen any exercise equipment provide. It’s really not a game. It’s more of an application suite. Some mini-games, sure, but the bulk of it is a personal trainer suite. Huh? No, stop hitting me! Oww! Oww! :smiley:

Yup, jog in place. The first run I did had me following the pace of the Mii in front of me for the first 2/3rds of the run and the last third was chasing a faster dog. The jogging also doesn’t take place on the WiiBoard. It’s a bit odd.

Har de har har. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone tried it with aerobic weights yet? I’m pretty in shape and am skeptical about running in place or situps (I hear step aerobics work for some people, and this is no different), but if I could “up the burn” using ankle weights or hand weights, it could be really cool.

I hope to burn many calories while walking around to various electronics retailers in a fruitless search for one of these damnfool things.

I snagged this yesterday. I went to Circuit City because they indicated ‘in stock.’ When I got there later, everyone said they were sold out. So I thought, OK I’ll just go home and order one for Father’s Day - if it’s anything like finding a Wii this will take awhile. (We just got our Wii for Mother’s day!) I get home and I see the option - ‘Free in-store pickup today.’ Huh? I was JUST there and they said they were OUT. Okay then, I’ll place an order and see what’s up. I placed my order and about an hour later I was able to go pick it up. (This was hard to do since I had to spill the beans I got a Wii Fit for an early father’s day gift.)

ANYWAYS…I love this game. I’m avid MMOer and yea, I’ve gained some weight and had a baby and I play MMOs probably far too much. I spent about 60 minutes on the various games, unlocked a few new yoga moves, skii’ed, got my face smacked by flying panda heads, tightrope walked, ran - I really liked all of them! I did have some problems finding the ‘sweet’ spot on the board for some of the yoga poses since I’d be in the right spot for the left, but the right was totally out of balance for some reason.

So far - loving it!

For those that are wanting the WiiFit AND a Wii, Target has a good bundle for $399. The bundle includes:
Wii=$250
Wii Fit=$90
Nunchuck=$20
Controller Accessories=$20(?)
And a recharger=$10(?)

I want to try this, but my wife has a “one console only” rule. I’m working on ending that, but it’s an uphill battle. HEhehe

I hope those question-marked items aren’t correct, because a $390-value bundle for $399 doesn’t seem like a very good value to me. :smiley:

My wife had hers shipped from Amazon and was rather disappointed that the estimated delivery date of yesterday didn’t happen, but it came today and she’s been IMing me updates on her progress. After her first half hour workout, she told me she already had two bruises (she bruises easily). When I asked her how she got bruises from a pad that lies on the floor, all she responded was, “yoga tree”. Apparently I need to stop on the way home and get a rechargeable battery and silicone sleeve to maintain super hubby status. Maybe then I’ll get to play with it.

Welcome to the Wii bundles. Right now, if you want to order a Wii online, you’re pretty much stuck buying a bundle and you will not save over retail price for the items in general.

They were out at Toys R Us and Target. This is the first time, however, that I’ve seen the Wii itself sitting on a shelf at Target. The Toys R Us person was rather rude, telling us that we should have preordered. I had no idea so many people would be interested, to tell you the truth.

I got lucky yesterday afternoon and wandered into a Wal-Mart while they were stocking the shelf. It was the fifth place I’d been to. Wasn’t able to take it out of the package until today…

I tell you, I just don’t get yoga. And I thought I had a hell of a lot better balance. The Aerobics stuff is hellafun, though.

Sounds like some kind of treadmill is required. Introducing a treadmill always helps.

So it sounds like you guys are having good experiences of these things?

I’m kinda surprised, because the TV ads make it look like Wii Shit - showing people gingerly transferring weight from one foot to the other, or timidly stepping on and off.

I managed to get one at Target. We were on our way for family pictures and hit Target because it was A> on the way B> Open. I wandered in and they had 8 or so behind the counter.

Here is the sad sad news… an open confession to all the Dopers out there. I am too heavy for the Balance Board. :frowning:

So, as of now I just get to sit and watch Wifey play. Wifey’s reviews are very positive though. She loves it. She was usually just a jogger, and she’ll probably continue to jog as well. But she is way into the strength and yoga.

I’ve got about a month or so before I can give a personal review. :frowning:

One of my colleagues has one as well - her husband has decided to to the jogging part on the exercise bike with the wii remote in his pocket and likes it much better than the jogging in place thing.

I played Wii Fit for awhile when I first got it but don’t find it particularly compelling, though I do like the weight graph. I’d prefer it if I could thread 10 exercises together and have them come up one after the other without constantly needing to fiddle with the remote.

Though it’s a useful tool for making you more aware of your body, the Wii Fit isn’t even close to a workout substitute. If you’re like my fiance and don’t get regular exercise beyond walking to work or whatever, you’ll probably really enjoy it (and he does). If you’re like me and regularly go to the gym, you probably won’t use it.

It’s not as good as actually working out, but if you don’t normally work out it’s infinitely better than nothing. I think the concept of the Wii Fit is great - I’m just not its target audience.

An updated review…

Last night the younger two kids gave it a try. The 6 year old girl did a sample as she wanted to try it out but had her friend waiting to go for a bike ride. She loved the hula hoops but didn’t get quite the hang of it.

Then the 8 year old boy who is a video game fanatic. He ended up playing for almost an hour and a half (49 minutes game time). He loved the tightrope and did that about 10 times before getting to the other side. He tried the hula hoops and didn’t really get it either. He then went on to the step class and that wasn’t his cuppa. But once he found the running he stuck with it. He did the regular a couple times, then unlocked the advanced and did that a couple more times until he unlocked the free run. He ran for 10 minutes chasing the puppy and loving it. He’s hoping to get some more time on it this weekend, so that’s a good sign.

I did the Wii Fit this morning on my own and I’m still unlocking things myself. I finally unlocked the third step class (free step) and was really disappointed with it. It’s up up down down up up down down over and over and over again with the wiimote ticking like a metronome.

I also unlocked the balance bubble which is hella fun. I was almost late getting to work this morning as I hadn’t quite completed it but kept getting close to the end. It’s frustrating but fun and it made me realize how accurate and responsive the wii balance board is.

I’m slowly making progress and I’m wondering if we should have a WiiFit progress thread.
