The Wii Fit Thread

So, who’s getting Wii Fit today? I grabbed mine this morning since I got the word that apparently there was a bit of a crush for units, and I didn’t want to end up in the same position as I was with Mario Kart, where I had to wait weeks to finally get a copy.

When I go out for errands, I’m off to pick it up today.

Mine’s shipping from Amazon and should be here in the next couple of days.

I’m looking forward to it–I’ve gotten out of the habit of exercising much since I got addicted to WoW and I have an extremely short attention span for exercise-type activity if my mind isn’t engaged, so I’m hoping this will jump-start me.

A Haiku:

Got one at Wal-mart.
Gal said they were going fast.
Target was sold out.

Picking mine up after work. I ordered it for my daughter, as she is the primary Wii player. I may mess with it a bit.

I picked up my pre-order at lunch today but didn’t have time to play with it yet. I have been quite remiss with going to the gym over the last couple weeks because I wanted to get the Wii Fit and have that track my progress and goals. I can’t wait to fire it up tonight!

First thoughts…

It is horribly, horribly addicting. Just as I was hoping for.

As a MMORPG veteran, I had hoped that Wii Fit could create the same sense of ‘grinding’. I never thought I could commit to doing repetitive tasks before playing WoW, and I’ve found that by applying the same ‘grind’ concepts to other areas, I’ve managed to get a lot more done.

Wii Fit works in nicely with that. I found myself running home to play over lunch, then running home back after work to keep unlocking things and setting records, and wanting to know how I’ll keep weighing in! I ended up playing for an hour today. Not an hour of Wii time, but an actual hour of exercise (it logs how much time each exercise is worth for you, and “banks” it.) Most of this was in aerobics. I’m fairly spent.

I find that I can work up a sweat, but the exercises aren’t so difficult as to be frustrating. The strength training and yoga range from simple to pretty difficult.

I particularly like the aerobic exercises - in particular the ‘step’ group. Basically a step class meets DDR. I’ve already unlocked all three modes.

The feedback from the game is pretty decent - it lets you know if your balance is off during the yoga, for example, or gives you other tips. Sort of like an exercise tape, but with specific feedback for you.

It encourages you to do 30 minutes a day in increments of at least 10 minutes each, so that’s my goal. I figure even on busy days I can fit in at least 10 minutes at a time before work, at lunch, and after work.

So far I’m totally sold on the Wii Fit and am hoping more fitness games are en route for the Balance Board.

Apparently this game is popular. Who knew? I can’t find it anywhere.

I left work at 8am to run out and pick up Wii Fit at the nearest Target. I raced back to the electronics counter to find another guy already being waited on for the same item. He bought all four units that they had in stock. I wanted to punch that greedy fucker in the back of the head. I then headed to the closest Sprawlmart and managed to grab one there but they were going fast. A quick check on craiglist, and there’s a ton of people trying to cash in on these.

I haven’t tried it yet because Idol is on.

I went to Target this morning (yes, I was there when they opened) and shelled out my $100 (once I added in tax), brought it home and then went into work.

After work/dinner, I hooked it up. Like fluiddruid, I ended up doing almost an hour of exercise - I like the step class too (but haven’t unlocked the 3rd level yet), and realize that my balance is not all that great - but it will get better.

That said, there are no lies here. That initial body test horrified me. I knew I’d gained since quitting smoking/moving cross country, but I didn’t realize it was that much. Well, maybe I did - there was some reason I was avoiding the scale, I’m sure.

I know that it’s not a tool for the hardcore exercise folk, but if it gets me moving again, and sucks me in, then I"m all for it.

And if you haven’t tried the soccer ball heading in the balance activities? Yeah, getting your mii hit in the face by cleats and other stuff is pretty amusing.

Color me skeptical. I just cannot imagine getting a good workout from a video game, nor can I imagine it being fun enough to make up for not being a good workout.

Step aerobics works for some people, and this is no different.

No, it’s definitely not going to give you the same workout as a treadmill or exercise bike, but the feedback Wii Fit gives you is more than I’ve ever seen any exercise equipment provide. I haven’t bought it yet, but you can see Flash demos here.

It’s really not a game. It’s more of an application suite. Some mini-games, sure, but the bulk of it is a personal trainer suite.

My first impressions:

Good solid board, nice variety of activities, I want either a holster or a stand for the wiimote in between a lot of the exercises.

Last night, I did the beginning tests and my fitness age was 44, this morning, after re-testing, my fitness age was 33. (I’m 35). So I guess that this is going to fluctuate as well as the weight will based on time of day, etc. I loved the goals that I was able to set for myself (although it’s more based on either a BMI/Weight with a time table). It’s great seeing those and being able to incorporate my outside workouts and have it all tracked in one place. Good motivation.

My favorite activity so far is the step class. I’ve unlocked the advanced and had a lot of fun with that one. (Although, I wish that I could stick an SD card into the Wii and have some better music). This would be one stand alone game that if it were advanced, I’d quickly pick up. And maybe that’s where this system is going, more games out there that go further into depth using the WiiFit board (I know that there’s already WiiSki out there).

A bit of relies on honesty. With the game, the board and myself. I did jackknife situps this morning and realized that the board doesn’t really know what I’m doing, it only knows that at one moment my feet are on the board, the next they’re off.

The balance games are tricky fun. (Wii Fit has told me that I have good balance, apparently only when I’m standing still though). It took me 8 tries on the beginner level to ski downhill and get between ALL of the flags. I eventually did it. The tightrope walk was something I tried only once. I made it with just over one second to spare too.

This was my first intro to yoga as well. I’ve always wanted to try it so it’s nice to do with a very slow instruction. All I can say is that my tree needs some pruning.

Overall, I’m excited about it.

So, do you need to have a Wii system first, and this is in addition to it? It sounds like something I might try. I don’t exercise at all, and it shows. :frowning:

You’ll need a Wii console first. It’s pretty expensive if you only figure on buying Wii Fit, but keep in mind the Wii console also comes with Wii Sports, which has a lot of sports games that can be a lot of active fun, too.

That tightrope is the death of me. I’m so horrible at it that I now only get perverse joy in the beauty of my leap from the rope to the hard ground below.

And much like most other body measurements, the BMI has little basis in reality when you are 6’9". But, this game is a blast.

My mom is getting this for my daughters birthday. I should be playing it some time this weekend.

I haven’t tried the skiing downhill one yet - I did make it across the tightrope, eventually. My favorite balance game so far remains the soccer heading thing. Because nothing’s as much fun as getting hit in the face with cleats.

Yes, it tells me I have fine balance, when I’m standing still on the body test, but once I get into the balance games & yoga poses, ha! I’ll improve, eventually, right?

Hey folks- is this a one-person-at-a-time sort of thing, or can you alternate turns or something?

Actually ideally you’d be able to hook up two boards and let two people “compete”. Does anyone know if this is possible? All of the videos show people doing one person, one thing at a time.

It’s almost all one person and I think the manual stated that only one board can be hooked up to the Wii. There is one exercise that I’ve found (there may be more unlocked) that is for two players and that’s running (with the WiiMote in your pocket).

It’s actually a shame as it would be an awesome multiplayer game.
