The Wii Fit Thread

Raving Rabbids looked interesting. We’re going to visit friends in a couple weeks who own a Wii (and who hooked us on getting one in the first place) so I’ll see if I can try out something interesting on their system.

My plan is to use the Fit in the mornings before work - typically I grind quests/crafting items in WoW before going out to work, and I think I’d feel better if I exercised. I’m about 7 pounds over my preferred weight, and in better shape than I have any right to be considering I pretty much do not exercise except for walking a couple miles in the course of each day.

I want the option for females ‘It’s that TIME of the month…okay?’

Has anyone noticed, I see it mentioned here about extreme weight gains/losses - we had 15lbs lost one day, and noticed it again today when hubby moved the body board mid exercise it asked if he had gone and gained some weight. We use the board on a semi-decent carpeted floor and were wondering if that makes such a big difference. Our weight gains/loss are pretty similiar (same huge fluctuations on the same day). It’s kind of weird.

Oh! Another funny thing, hubby worked out yesterday - I didn’t, and the game told him to take a day off to rest (he didn’t.) I went to work out today and the game asked why I was too lazy to work out yesterday? If I see a blue blinking light following me and starting to sound like HAL, I’m running!

Has anyone else unlocked “Lotus Focus”. What a weird, weird game.

I had my partner try Wii Fit this morning. He’s not a gamer and tends to not really enjoy them when I have play along with me. Well, this morning the only reason he stopped was because he was going to work. He loved it. A big part was that he would try something out and see that I had a better score and the competition started from there.

I’ve done at least 30 minutes everyday since it came out and I am already hopeful for a sequel with more stuff on it. This is such a winner of a product that I feel like shouting it from the mountains.

Played it with my daughter over the weekend. This gadget was worth the money. It’s fun like eyetoy kinetic for the PS2 but much more user friendly. I like it a lot.

I’ve got the Lotus Focus one - I’m doing it at the end of my workout, after I do some stretches as I cool down. It’s kind of a nice way (until I shift around and end it) to relax at the end of a workout.

I feel better, because on my third day I had lost 12! The BMI graph is a mess.

I also missed Day Four, and got dissed by that smug board. Bastard. To add humiliation to that, I had my mother try it out and her Wii Age was only a couple years above mine.

I told her to get her own damn Wii now.

Is your weight and BMI hidden from other users?

It can be if you password protect it.
I like the idea of the Wii Fit and it does what it’s supposed to do, even though it has some glaring problems.

It’s nowhere as good as a gym, though. This program won’t get you in shape. It’ll help if you’re a couch potato. If you really want results, do yourself a favor and get a gym membership.

Island Hop run.

Worst.

Game.

Ever.

Gym memberships do not equate to fitness. If you want results you have to push yourself regardless of the type of exercise you are doing. Push ups at a gym are not more effective than push ups on the Wii balance board.

I am already seeing that the awareness aspect of this is will help me. I like the idea of checking in every day to watch what’s going on with my BMI and weight. I’m also terribly fascinated with the fine-control balance games. It’s something I have not really ever worked on, just kind of taken for granted.

Some of the strength exercises are no joke, too.

Hell, three turns of the advanced hula hooping is no joke.

That is so hard core. I love it.

If anyone wants a bit more motivation, read this guy’s blog here. He was engaged to be married and tried to drop some weight before the wedding and he tracked the 7 weeks of progress.

(hijack)
I borrowed Raving Rabbids from a coworker this last weekend based on the same interest that you have, and I have to say, I was *significantly * underwhelmed. :frowning: It’s tons of minigames strung together with chewing gum. The controls are a tad sluggish as well, which nailed me on specific minigames such as keeping outhouse doors closed so the exposed Rabbids don’t shriek and squash your face with a plunger as revenge.

The shots of the Rabbids demoing how to hold the Wiimote and nunchuk for each minigame are really cool. And the sense of humor in Rabbids is awesomely twisted, but all in all, doesn’t make up enough for the gameplay, IMHO.
YMMV, etc.

This game is so CUTE.
I love how involved the Miis are. I love how the other people who have a file are the ones who get the most airtime during your exercises (my bf is always the referee when I play soccer heading, for instance. If he’s in the room when I do something he’ll try to mimic what his Mii is doing in the background). I love how in the plaza my Mii does yoga poses while his Mii snores (he won’t wake up!).
When I did the soccer balls the first time I laughed hysterically the whole time after getting smacked in the face (probably a better workout). The step class, though it was a little weak aerobics-wise, was so corny and adorable I almost teared up, and I was pleased to see how different the next one up was. I like the aesthetics and the balance meters and…just everything.

I realize, though, that novelty is probably a big part of my enchantment with this thing, so I’m taking things slowly. I’m doing 20 mins in the piggybank a day now, will move to 30 soon. I’m sticking with unlocking things at a leisurely pace to try and keep myself from getting tired of things, as I often do. I’m afraid I’ll be sad when there’s nothing new left to do, as I don’t care that much about setting new records, but that seems a way off.

The thing I don’t like is that I think the scale is inaccurate. The first time I weighed myself, then I did a few exercises and weighed myself again (like 20 mins. later, and didn’t eat or drink anything, though it had passed midnight so it was the “next day”), and it said I’d gained 1.5 pounds. Also, it’s always 3-4 pounds less than what my bathroom scale says (on “light” clothing), even when I’m not wearing any clothes (in the bathroom). Which is flattering, but I’m glad I didn’t wait for this instead of buying a scale. Also, the fitness age appears to be random, and I don’t like how it’s not often clear whether/when you can put your wiimote down or what to do with it (except a few instances of “keep it in your pocket” and I hardly ever happen to have pockets while doing it). Also, I wish I could get to repeated exercises faster, or combine them (it suggests combos, but won’t actually do it - does this come later?)

It’s actually a lot more appealing than the commercials make it seem to me, but I knew I was going to like it from the start, so i guess it doesn’t matter. I’m not going to stop swimming or going to the gym, but this will be a darling supplement. We haven’t quite figured out where to put the board when we’re not using it, though.

I hope to see other games using the balance board out soon! Like, actual objective/plot games. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

No, but doing push ups with a 45 pound weight on your back does. So does doing tricep exercises with something more than “a bottle of water”.
Like I said, Wii Fit is good for couch potatoes, but a gym membership is what you’ll be needing after you get active, if you have any real, substantial goals.

No, you don’t need a gym membership. The only things for a which a gym membership is necessary are power lifting and body building. In those case, the squat racks, huge amounts of weights, and (most importantly) spotters readily available make the gym the only real choice. It’s perfectly possible to be in excellent physical condition without a gym or without a Wii Fit for that matter. You, personally, may find it difficult to stay in shape without a gym, but lots of people do so.

I don’t know. I think I’d like to know how fit someone can actually get with reasonable exposure to Wii Fit. I’d venture to say that there’s a certain plateau you can get to. Only after that, you need either much more exposure of a gym membership. Then again, it could also hinge on your goals. If you want to not go anywhere and lose a little extra weight if you’re already overweight, then Wii Fit is for you. I think if you’re serious about it, you really do need a gym membership.
Hell, I’m not in the condition I was once in, but I’m still in really good shape. Wii Fit isn’t for me.

I’m convinced Wii Fit is perfect for me - I’m healthy but not in shape, only 5-10 lbs overweight typically, and I’m a major couch potato. I’d have to have quite the mental turnaround to get myself to a gym these days. However, playing videogames, especially MMORPGs that require “unlocking” new things and “grinding” - oh god, I am all over that.

I got the notice this morning that it has just shipped via UPS, though I really hope it’ll arrive earlier than Monday. :frowning:

I got mine today. I love the yoga, and I’m pleasantly surprised at how good I am at it. I know some modified poses (especially tree pose, which I could never do the way they do it and probably shouldn’t even try) and did those when needed, but I was still consistently scoring in the high 80s on yoga. Ironic, since I SUCK at the balance games, although I did see some improvement on the soccer ball one.

I got 20 coins in the bank today, but probably had my heart rate up for 30 minutes, especially since I did the exercises along with the demos to get more reps in. What’s going to be really interesting is seeing how it freaks out that I keep gaining weight–somehow I don’t think the Wii Fit factors in pregnancy!
