I’m only up to the middle of the second season but I don’t think it’s a show you can watch one episode of and make a judgement - of course you’re not going to waste your time on something you’re obviously not going to like, but it takes more than one episode to pick up speed and make a proper impact on the viewer. I was a little bit “meh” after the very first episode too, but by the middle of the first season I was like “THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER”.
Feel free to start those threads, then.
Zeldar and I had a very specific plan/goal as discussed in the thread he linked to above. We thought it better to get all 8 of the polls running at once to get them over with rather than drag it out with a different poll each week.
It’s the best show I’ve ever seen.
But the “pick your favourite Wire Character” threads are amazingly bloated and ill-advised. I apologize to the folks who put it together but, really, that should have taken one poll with maybe 25 names, tops. Nobody is going to pick “that Latino journalist chick who was in ten episodes.”
Funny. That was my choice. And I’ve never even seen the show.
Thanks for the input… Would have been a lot more helpful if you’d offered this advice in the poll discussion thread, though.
The idea wasn’t to just find people’s #1 favorite character - because it would certainly be either Bubbles or Omar and there’s no fun in that. We thought it woudl be much more interesting to see which other characters were people’s favorites, not just the obvious ones.
The method we used seemed to be the best option to whittle the list down to form one single poll w/ the top favorites. I’m glad we did so because there were definitely some characters that surprised me with their popularity (didn’t expect any votes at all for the Deacon, and the number of votes Prop Joe and Bodie got was also surprising to me - I dont’ think I would have thought to put either of those characters in a tope ten.) Also, Alma (the Latino journalist chick) had more votes than I expected as well.
As with all threads on the Dope, nobody has to read them if they don’t want to. Eight threads out of fifty on a page isn’t really that big of a deal, and most of those threads dropped to the 2nd page after the first day. If you have your settings changed to show more threads per page, say 100 at a time like I do, then it’s even less intrusive.
Or maybe this was all part of a master plan between Zeldar and myself to ruin “The Wire” for everybody for all time.
Chill out, Bob.
For a one-off joke thread with a gamed poll, you’re taking this thread too serious.
You know, it’s not like I actually give a shit. I didn’t even open any of your threads because I have zero interest in forum polls in general
I still think it’s a stupid waste of time, but wondering why someone would bother is about the limit of my interest.
It’s a natural offshoot from discussion of the show. And some of us really like polls, and lists.
Great series!
All I can say is: Turn on the captions.
In one of the extras that come with the DVD, some of the main characters admitted that, at times, they had no idea what their dialogue meant.
And they were African Americans!
I’m voting Jimmy McNulty straight through the process.
