How about a bit of THE NOZZLE?
I’ve never seen the show. Apparently it’s the greatest television ever created in the history of the universe, including all televisual entertainment on all other planets.
But I read its summary and just go “eh, not my thing,” and so have never watched.
And THE WIRE fans come fighting back!
Well, vote wise.
Of course, I rigged the poll. You can vote both yes and no.
I’m sick of there being so few threads about it.
Amen to that! Start some!
What is this show, “The Wire,” you speak of?
It must be that thing with Pam Anderson all titted up for warfare.
I’ve just started watching The Wire on DVD thanks to the SDMB obsession with it. I’m hoping I finish the whole series before the current threads become zombies so I can participate, I can’t go into them at the moment for fear of spoilers.
So if someone could post in them every 2 weeks or whatever until I’m done, that’d be great, thanks, cheers, thanks a lot, awesome.
As Yul Brynner would say, multimediac17, “So let it be written, so let it be done.”
I just recently finished the The Wire DVD box; haven’t read any thread about it (“You stupid human…”). Started one myself though, in General Questions about the economics of drug dealing in Baltmore. That wasn’t enough for me to get sick about them.
The Wire is very good, but in my opinion a couple of seasons (three and four?) and several episodes wasn’t very interesting or entertaining; sort of going through the motions. It took me and my wife several months to get through the box, simply because we forgot about it every now and again.
The Sopranos (though many weak episodes), Battlestar Galactica (though several really bad episodes and shitty ending), Deadwood (though some rather weak episodes), and Lost are better in my book. – “Better”, as in I enjoyed them more. The Wire is very well done, nonetheless.
Why are these crime shows so popular? The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, and others I’m forgetting. Seems like each one that comes out is “the best show ever”–until the next one pops up.
Is it the grittiness or the chance to live vicariously, or what?
Give it a *little *rest. Maybe not so many threads all going at once.
Wow, we must have dramatically different tastes. I haven’t seen the Sopranos and I like Deadwood but LOST comes under the category of ‘just keep inventing random drivel to keep the suckers watching’. And don’t get me started on Battlestar Galactica that show was absolute drivel, a poorly acted soap-opera full of hackneyed emotion and cliched highschool philosophy. I had to stop watching, and I even made it through the first series of DollHouse.
I found the Wire gripping from start to finish. I watched each series very quickly and was trully sad when each ended. I consider it the best show ever made, without a shadow of a doubt.
OTOH I did think a separate poll on your favourite character from each series was pretty moronic, especially when you consider all the other conversation worthy topics the show raises.
Well since I don’t own a television, a PC, or a gramophone I don’t know what The Wire is.
I do find it funny when people ask me “Have you watched the Wire yet?” over half a decade after it originally started airing on Irish television.
I hardly even know what it is. I was surprised to see the preponderance of threads on it.
Just in case there’s some real interest as to why there are as many THE WIRE threads as there are, all is explained in THE WIRE: Polls to determine Favorite Characters, Pre-Poll Discussion and a summary of what’s going on with all of them is in this post there.
Imagine one poll with over 100 choices. The 90+ shown are just the ones getting at least one vote. Many others weren’t even voted for that once.
Believe it or not, Bob Ducca and I tried to keep it as simple as we could. I guess we’re learning what not to do in similar cases in the future.
I, too, have never seen it. I want to watch it someday, since the consensus is that it’s so spectacularly great. But I can’t help but think that I’ll be somewhat disappointed by it, considering the fact that it’s been built up so much.
And I don’t see it being better than Deadwood, full stop.
Deadwood’s great, but The Wire just beats it out, IMO. Even if it was just a little bit worse than Deadwood, though, it would still be pretty great, right?
Voted yes. I liked the show but this is bordering on spam.
I kept hearing about how great it was, so I was delighted when it suddenly showed up On Demand last year. I happily started Ep 1 Season 1, but at the end I just said “meh”. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out what all the noise was about.
